PORTEOUS, John - 89, Caledonia, Guysborough Co.,
died Wednesday, October 9, 2002, in Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow.
Born in Winchburgh, West Lothian, Scotland,
he was a son of the late David and Jeannie (Simpson) Porteous.
He was the last surviving member of his family.
John came to Canada in 1928 and moved to Caledonia in 1934,
where he was self- employed in the lumber business.
In later years he was foreman for the Pictou Shipyards and Scott Paper.
He was a councillor for the Municipality of St. Mary's for 12 years,
Honorary member of the City Club and was also a member of the Shrine Philae Temple,
Halifax and Euclid Masonic Lodge No. 92, New Glasgow.
In earlier years, he was very active in the Bluenose Curling Club
and the Abercrombie Golf Club where he was club champion in 1948.
He was well-known in the area as a hunting guide,
an avid fisherman, bird watcher, and his love of animals and the outdoors.
He is survived by his very dear friend, Sandra Patterson.
He was predeceased by his wife, the former Gertrude Marie Campbell;
his brother, James. Cremation to take place.
There will be no visitation by request. A private memorial service will be held at a later date
in H.W. Angus Funeral Home Chapel, New Glasgow.
