McGRATH, Ellis Matthew

McGRATH, Ellis Matthew - 87, Bible Hill, Colchester Co.,
formerly of Aspen, Guysborough Co.,
died Saturday, July 26, 2003, in Colchester Regional Hospital, Truro.

Born in Aspen, Guysborough Co., August 25, 1915,
he was the fifth son of the late James and Adeliah (MacLaughlin) McGrath.

Ellis was a well-known singer, guitarist, songwriter
and composer. Ellis sang over Radio Station CJFX
in the early 40s. He was known as the "Two Gun Cowboy"
and "Gunner McGrath". He was a member of the George Chappell Band
before moving to Ontario, where he worked for many years.
After his retirement, he returned to his native Aspen to live.
For the past while, he had been living with
his nephew, Carl and wife Laura in Bible Hill. Surviving are sister,
Marie Tate, Melrose; sister-in-law, Minnie McGrath, Aspen;
many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. He was predeceased by his wife,
Josephine in 1966; brothers, Chester, Fraser,
Frederick, and William; sister, Catherine Mills.
Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation
by the request of the deceased. A public graveside committal service
will be held 2 p.m. Thursday in Evergreen Cemetery, Aspen, Guysborough Co.,
Rev. Cornelia Van Bentum officiating. Following the committal service,
a reception will be held in Kirk United Church Hall, Aspen.
Donations in memory of Ellis may be made to the
Evergreen Cemetery Fund, Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia
or a charity of choice. Arrangements under the direction of
H.W. Angus Funeral Home, New Glasgow.
