Often people like to engage in FFRP(Free Form Role Play). With FFRP there isn't very many rules you go by, just the usual "House" rules. Usually the house rules aren't that detailed and if you do something that is well "off" you'll get laughed at and, if the offense is bad enough, kick/banned from the room( if its IRC). Well basically what this page is for is to list my own personally rules for combat and RP
Basic RP Rules
1) Don't be a butt head! People don't like it when your character is a butt head so just try and be nice to everyone unless there is a reason why you're acting that way.
2) Keep OOC(Out Of Character) OOC and IC(In Character) IC. If you don't like some one OOC that doesn't mean your character knows them IC. If there is a reason to not liking someone IC and your character would know about it then let it be IC but make sure you have a good reason, not just the lame " I'm psychic and I pulled that out of your memories."
3) Use common Logic. If your across the room can you really hear that person that is whispering to someone else? if you attack someone can you then do a backflip with out any trouble? Could you really do that same backflip in chain mail? Plate armor? What about with a heavy shield on one arm and a sword/axe/weapon-of-choice in the other? if you don't think you could do it in real life then think about if your character could do it. If your character has a ( choose item type) of free movement then they might be able to do that kinda of stuff. Just think before you do.
4)Don't hold a grudge. When some one kills one of your characters all you other characters won't be on a blood hunt for the person that killed you. If you make a new character and go "hunting" how does this new character know about your old character? Why did this character suddenly decide to show up and go on this blood hunt?
5) Nobody is immortal and nobody is indestructible. If you make a "god" then you will be laughed at unless you can truly play him/her well. Personally a god wont get involved with lowly mortals and the god type characters should be left to the room operators, who can use them as NPC's(Non-Player characters). You may ask" what about elves they're often immortal?" well that's not true "true" elves from the myths of old died when cut with a steel or iron blade. Immortal means "not subject to death" but in RP that's just a little cheese. don't make an immortal character its just not cool.
I think thats enough on my basic RP rules
Basic Combat Rules
1) Do not strike you enemy. If your going to attack someone state your action in a form that will show you intend to do harm to them IE(In Example), "De'Arlo draws his short sword and steps up to Krag BoneStrong. He thrust the point of the short sword violently at Krag's belly hoping to make a nice, painful wound into Krag's bowel." note that De`Arlo suggested where the wound would land if it fell but he also said " as Krag's belly" if he had said "into Krag's Belly" that would be an auto hit. Auto hits are things that will get you laughed at and kicked. If someone Auto hits you, I suggest ignoring the attack.
2) Take your hits. If some one attacks you and you just "dodges quickly" back at them you will be laughed at once again. If you were to type out your defense and include your taking damage then that is a good hit move and you will be thought of as a good RPer. An example of a good defense is like this," Krag didn't notice De`Arlo when he first came up to me. But as the sword makes its way towards my belly I take a half step back trying to get out of the way. I trip over the bar stool next to me and go tumbling down to the ground, the blade of the short sword cutting my clothing and my right side. The wound bleeds mildly as I try to pull my own sword from its sheath." he made a logical defense and logically to an accurate amount of damage that would be typical a "weak" sword strike. Now you may not want to type in damage if your just starting a fight, but as the fight goes on you would, logically, tire and start taking more damage as you both battled on with each other.
3) Prepare some spells, not others. Some spells can kill in an instant, so don't cast " death" on someone with out spending some time building up your magical energies. Prep a few blocks of text like this, prep 1 " Neveroth finds that De`Arlo is most annoying. decides to cast a spell on him." prep 2 " Neveroth digs in his pouch of herbs and pulls out a piece of thyme, whispers to it for a few moments as it whither away." prep3 "Neveroth takes the minor magical properties of thyme and focuses the energy gained into a spell formula for a spell of heart stopping" prep 4" Neveroth points a finger at De'Arlo and screams out 'Die you overgrown walking carpet store!' and releases the spell at De`Arlo." De`Arlo all this time would be doing logical things like drinking his ale, playing with the wench, or if he noticed Neveroth doing his thing he might have gotten up and tried to kill Neveroth. That was a spell that would need to be Prepared, but if the spell your casting is not going to hurt or effect anyone then don't prep it, that will just be spam. If your going to cast a cantrip of " light candle" then just do it like this, " Neveroth points his finger at the candle and mutters a word. The candle lights up."
3) Take the magical hits to... sometimes. Now you need to make a judgment call. If you new about the spell being cast the you might have counter Prepared the spell, but if you didn't then you need to take a hit. If the spell is a physical spell like "fireball" then you can try to dodge, but still take a partial hit. If its a spell that can't be dodged normally like "mana bolt" then you either need to have to counter prep by making your own spell or you need a charm or something of the like that will be in your physical description when you enter a room. Charms can't protect against everything and wearing a lot of charms is cheese so don't do it.
4) Prep Tech Too. Tech is just like magic only its limited. A lot of times in FFRP people will use tech and not ever prep it. Thats stupid and it makes you look like a fool. If you have something thats Tech like a shot gun or a pistol or something like that prep it. This is an example, prep "Vinny_The_Fish glances at Bob slowly with a frown on my face. slowly reaches into my coat and pulls out a .38 revolver." prep2 "takes aim at Bob's head slowly" the attack" Vinny_The_Fish pulls the trigger letting the bullet fly with haste at Bob's head." Sadly bob would probably die unless he could actually dodge a bullet. Remember that the bigger the bang, the more you need to prep the spell/tech.
5) A prep table for spells

Thats pretty much the rules that I go by in FFRP. If you think before you do something then your probably not going to look silly. One more thing to remember is; not every character is the best at what they do. If you make your character out to be some invincible character when you final get your butt whipped in a fight your ego is gunny be broken, so just say you know how to fight, resist your ego, and make your character realistic. Remember we all can't have lever 20 fighters and Wizards. De`Arlo`for`nalve is a fighter of about level 2 or 3. I do get into fights with him and I often will lose a fight cause I chose to play him corectly.
One last thing... were not all perfect like on TV and stuff so don't make RP a psychological way of making yourself seem perfect. Trust me on this one, all it will do is make you look stupid and make people not want to play with you. If you can't take things happening to your characgter with stride, if you can't let your character just be something tohelp a plot along, if you get involved personally, then don't RP. Its all fun and games until someone get there ego hurt.
Thanks, these are my personal standards, don't get upset of someone doesn't prep 14 times for a spell of " I KILL YOU!" this is just common sence things and not "set in stone" rules. If you have any idea's for rules to go by on my page e-mail ClockWork
