~My Hosta Gardens~

(still under construction) I have been collecting hostas for 3 years now and I must say they are very addictive! Most people think that there are only a couple of different types of hostas. The green and white ones, blue ones and the green ones. Well in fact, there are over 4,000 different types of hostas. Different colour combinations, different sizes, some have smooth leaves, some have bumpy leaves, some have thick leaves (slug don't like those ones) some with thin leaves. Some are blue, green, blue and white, green and white, yellow, yellow and white, some change colours as the season goes along too. As hostas get older they also change, their leaves get bigger, some of them the leaves change shape, they get bumpy etc. So that is why hostas are so addictive as there are so many different things about them, if one only looks at them. Some have very fragrant blooms and one even has a double bloom! So here are a few pictures of some of my hostas.

~Clubhouse Garden~

This is a garden we made from my son's old clubhouse. We collected wood frm the bay and nailed it all together. Last year we filled it full of peat moss, leaves, compost and dirt and planted my hostas in it. We believe in recycling

*LOL*

This is Fire and Ice. I got it in 2001. It is not as large as it will get with maturity, but it sure brightens up a shady spot.

This is June, it is 3 years old here, but it was just moved to this bed this year so it could get more sun and I think it likes it here the best.

This is Cherry Berry. People like it because of it's red flower scapes.

~Crabapple Garden~

I love this hosta, it may have been around for a long time, but it is a classic for a reason. fortunei aureomarginata

This is Gold Standard and it is one of 3 I have growing in full sun around my pond.

**********

I got this one in a trade 3 years ago, it is called Sunpower

Guacamole is a fragrant hosta which blooms in my garden in August. This one is in the rose garden and gets almost all day sun.

This is tokudama aureonebulosa (front) with a common but nice looking undulata variegata.

~Hosta Bed~

I had this bed made so that I could see my hostas from the kitchen. It is 36" tall and 4 ft wide and 8' long. I had put peat moss, leaves, and compost and worm castings in it last year. This spring I had to replant everything as the bed shrunk about 6 inches. The hostas in this bed did grow very well and fast, so I guess they loved the good soil in here. When I moved them I found their roots had grown like crazy!

Here is Minuteman

This is tokudama flav. It is a blue and green with nice thick leaves.

White Christmas I got last year and because of the afternoon sun it was getting it started to melt out until I stuck a large coffee can in front of it to give it a bit more shade. This spring I moved it into the back a bit so it only gets morning sun and it has done much better. This was taken July 17th

~Family Room Garden~

This is the new garden I planted this year. In it is Wide Brim, Great Expectations, and Inniswood.

***********

This is Bright Lights. I have had it for 2 years

**********

Loyalist, 2 years old

**********

This is Mildred Seaver, I got her in a secret trade last year and she has done very well and has grown very fast.

*******

This is Paul's Glory, one of my favorite. The colour of the leaves change as the season goes along

This is a picture of a sport that my son found on a hosta. He is holding it open so that I can get a better picture of it. We planted it in our family room garden and hope that it will survive the winter. Because it doesn't have much choriphill in the leaves it might not survive, but we are hoping.
