Multi-directional scarf one short row variation No way Iris of artyarns did what I did, but you can achieve a similar no pickup, no decrease, no yarn cutting result with short rows. Cast on X number of stitches for your width. Form the base triangle by knitting one less stitch each row until you have either one remaining centre stitch to be worked (if you cast on an odd number) and an equal number of unworked stitches on either side of the centre stitch or no to be worked stitches remaining and equal number of unworked stitches on each needle (even number cast on). Form the second triangle by knitting back across the stitches on the right hand needle and on each return row knit one fewer stitch until all stitches exhausted. Form the third triangle by knitting across all stitches and, as with the second triangle, on each return (wrong side) row knit one fewer until all stitches exhausted. From this point on the setup and continue should be easily enough patterned to require no further instructions -- you'll alternately be building stitches or losing as you go. You can form diamonds as I've done in the sample on web page or no. For symmetry, when you come to the end, you just reverse the first two foundation triangles. And, in this version, no picking up stitches, no ncreasing or decreasing but might want a bit of blocking or not (YMMV) to bring it into plumb.
