Walking

So how does one prepare to walk 60 miles over the course of 3 days?

When I went to the orientation. One of the pieces of paper was a sheet with a training schedule for 24 weeks (FWIW, that's already 2 months shy of the suggested 8 month training schedule suggested by "the book"). I freaked out -- there weren't enough weeks until the event to do the schedule as laid out. The best I could manage would be 23 weeks and I'd have to hit the ground running and I was still trying to decide whether this was something I really thought I could do.

Then there was the how do I work, return to my old (prebroken toe and piled on pounds) workout schedule and add these walks? Not possible. Oh sure, I could wake up at 4am and drive to a training walk then drive the 23 miles to work and then hit the gym afterward -- I could, but I'd burn out in about two weeks. So what? Give up on the idea? Or maybe, get back to walking, build the mileage and do a lot of cross training (read back to the gym) too.

I'd already been tracking my mileage and gym time starting on the day I did the Making Strides walk (I walked the 2 miles to the event, did the event and walked home). When doing bike or cross trainer, I always select either a random interval programme or a hill for the challenge. The run down to date:

Training Walks

I'd love to do one or more of these but so far they are not fitting into my schedule. Yes, walking in a group is different than walking on your own. But I'm already a veteran of Taking Strides for Breast Cancer and the Liberty Walk/Run so I know about having to slow your pace because you're part of a mob. I also know about walking on pavement and negotiating my way in and out of slower moving pedestrians in my urban environment.
