When thinking of the IMAX experience, our minds automatically conjure
images of 3-D glasses and a screen so large it boggles the mind; many dont know that
a large percentage of IMAX films are not 3-D, and yet are every bit as enthralling.
Coral Reef Adventure, opening Oct. 3 at Sacramentos Esquire IMAX
theatre, is just such a movie.
On hand for the Christening of the films maiden voyage was Brad Ohlund, the
films director of photography. It took about a year and a half and $10 million
to film this project, explains Ohlund, and considering the average IMAX camera
only runs three minutes of film at a time with half an hour to change film between takes,
plus shooting at ocean depths where weve never filmed before, this film was the
biggest challenge wed ever faced.
The filming may have been the biggest challenge IMAX has ever faced, but the result is one
of the most stunningly beautiful projects ever to be show on the six-story screen. Viewers
are taken on a journey of discovery through the South Pacifics awe-inspiring and
endangered coral reefs. Featuring music by Crosby, Stills and Nash and narrative by Irish
film star Liam Neeson, Coral Reef Adventure is a groundbreaking film that sets
new records for underwater filmmaking.
Coral Reef Adventure is the remarkable story of Howard & Michele Hall, on
a journey to exotic locations including: Australias Great Barrier Reef, the coasts
of Fiji, Tahiti and Moorea and the mysterious Rangiroa atoll. The film has been critically
acclaimed nationwide for its stunning visual images and powerful, but not preachy,
environmental message, and rightly so. Many of the visual aspects of the film are
breathtaking as cameras zoom both over and under exotic islands taking the viewer to
places previously unviewed by human eyes.
