Rey's Story
My name is Rey Martinez. I am a re-entry college student. I graduated from high school in 1983 and didn’t return to school until the fall of 1998. I decided to return to school for a couple of reasons, the most important was to set a positive example for my daughter Monica. I enrolled in this class because my sister-in-law, Mary Martinez-Caballero, raved about it and because I wanted to learn about the struggles that Latinas face. It is easy to sit back and play the role of a male Latino raising a family, but I wanted to get a different prospective, so that I can communicate more effectively with my daughter. The stories and poems we have read and the discussions we have taken part in have helped me understand people of different backgrounds and cultures. I will pass these lessons on to my daughter and help her understand the beauty that everyone, regardless of color, age, gender, religion or sexual orientation, contributes to our society.
