Message From Deborah Sutherland (Grey Law Program Director)

Since 1979, Grey Law has been dedicated to providing free legal services and assistance to the elderly of our community. Funding for these services comes primarily through grants and donations.

Our volunteer attorneys and law students donate many hours of their time each month in our various clinics and community activities. But it is the people we serve-the seniors and senior-disabled of Ventura County - who are the heart and soul of Grey Law.

The mother who was unable to read or understand English who signed her name to a document believing it was a loan application, and when presented with an eviction notice realized she had signed away her home of 30 years. A Grey Law volunteer contacted the District Attorney's office and was able to keep our client in her home (and the "bad guy" went to jail).

The disabled senior who has a service animal to assist her, who was denied access to medical care and to a local department store because "No Animals Allowed". A Grey Law volunteer contacted the doctor and the store manager and explained how they were in violation of the Americans With Disabilities Act by denying our client access to their facilities. Through education, not litigation, an awareness of the special needs of our client (and other disabled persons) was raised within our community.

The senior on a severely limited income who became so entangled in credit card debt because he needed high-cost prescription medications to live. A Grey Law volunteer was able to assist our client in obtaining MediCal and SSI benefits. In addition, Grey Law was able to intervene with the creditors to the benefit of our client.

Grey Law is proud of the work we do in helping our clients. We are appreciative of our volunteers who give so much of their own time to our clients, receiving little but an occasional "thank you" or hug. We are grateful to our contributors who make Grey Law possible.
