JICKLINGS OF NORFOLK

THE JICKLINGS OF BRANCASTER

Brancaster lies immediately to the east of Titchwell on the coast of Norfolk. The Roman fort of Branodunum was located here. Today it is a beautiful little village, with a 14th century church. A mile further west is the busy tourist center of Brancaster Staithe with two well-known pubs: the Jolly Sailors and the Lobster Pot. Ferry boats take bird watchers to the Scolt Head Island nature reserve.

The registers for St. Mary's parish church are at the Norfolk Record Office in Norwich.

Ann Jacklin, daughter of William and Dorothy Jacklin, was baptized on 27 Nov 1693. Could this be a variant spelling of Jickling?

Elizabeth Jickling, a widow, was buried at Brancaster 8 Oct 1738. Her will [Norfolk Archdeaconry - W53 40] was proved 28 Oct 1738 names three sons - George, a mariner of London; John, carpenter of Brancaster; and Francis, mariner of Brancaster. Elizabeth is without doubt the widow of George of Titchwell who died in 1711.  Her grandchildren John and Alice, son and daughter of John below, were to receive legacies on attaining the age of fourteen years and sixteen years.

John Jickling (1698-?), born in Titchwell, came to Brancaster to marry Elizabeth Chadd on 11 Apr 1726 and to raise his family. He worked as a carpenter, one of the few Jicklings of this period who wasn't a farmer, farm worker or mariner. John and Elizabeth had ten children, all baptized at St. Mary's in Brancaster:

Wife Elizabeth was buried at Brancaster on 29 Nov 1761. We have no record of John's death.

Francis Jickling of Brancaster married Mary Garret, also of Brancaster, on 1 May 1729. Their children baptized at Brancaster included:

Francis was buried at Brancaster 15 Sep 1745. His will was proved by the Archdeaconry of Norfolk the same year [W195 406].

John Jickling (1728-71), son of John and Elizabeth Chadd Jickling, married Ann Dracott at Thornham, a few miles east of Brancaster, beyond Titchwell, on 25 Oct 1753, but he brought her back to Brancaster where their four children were born and baptized:

Wife Ann Dracott was buried 7 Apr 1762 and John married Ann Sanders on 30 Dec 1765 in Brancaster. John signed his name on the marriage register, while Ann put her mark. Their three children were baptized in Brancaster: John, mariner of the brigantine Hinchingbrook, accidentally fell overboard and drowned. He was buried at Brancaster 8 Feb 1771 before the birth of his youngest child, David. His widow Ann received a small pension of between 2s 8d and 3s 2d weekly from 1771 to 1775. During this period she moved to Heacham some ten miles southwest, where she married Joseph Allen on 5 Oct 1776.

William Jickling married Susanna Dracott at Tatterford 5 Jun 1749. Their children were all baptized at Brancaster.

George Jickling (1733-1807) married Esther Thurlow (1732-1809) at Brancaster on 16 Nov 1758. This probably is the George, son of Francis and Mary, who was baptized at Brancaster 21 May 1733. Their children at Brancaster included: George, of Brancaster, was buried at Wells 16 Dec 1807. His will was proved in 1808 [W2 8]. Esther, his widow, was buried in Wells 7 Nov 1809.

Francis Jickling (1738-1808) married Elizabeth Hendry at Snettisham 10 Sep 1761. They lived first at Brancaster before moving to Wells about 1774. Their children baptized at Brancaster included:

The family then moved to Wells, where daughter Frances was born in 1775 and son John was born 14 Nov 1777. John died 26 Jul 1779. Elizabeth Hendry Jickling was buried at Wells on 21 Nov 1802, age 67. Francis was buried at Wells on 3 May 1808, age 69.

Another Francis Jickling married Esther Rix at Burnham Westgate on 23 Oct 1783. They lived at Brancaster in the 1780s. Their two children, baptized there, were:

Francis Jickling married Charlotte Pull at Holme-next-the-Sea 5 Apr 1785. Their children were all baptized at Brancaster. Francis Jickling, carpenter, married Sarah Holsworth, widow, at Brancaster 25 Feb 1813. Their children, all baptized at Brancaster, included: William Jickling (1792-1858), coal merchant and gentleman of Brancaster, was the son of George, shipmaster of Thornham, and Sarah Jickling. William died 30 Jun 1858 and was buried at Burnham Deepdale. His will, dated 28 Feb 1855, was proved 5 Aug 1858. His wife Ann, born in 1792 in Walsingham, and John Parker served as executors. He left his property to his sister Susan, widow of Michael Rayner; to Dinah, wife of James Lincoln, coal merchant of Thornham; to Mary Ann, wife of Charles Annis, fisherman of Brancaster; and to his wife Ann. Ann died 5 Feb 1859 and was also buried at Burnham Deepdale.

Rebecca Jickling [?] Jickling of Burnham, age 64, pauper, was living in Brancaster at the time of the 1851 census. Perhaps this is the former Rebecca Gates who married Robert Jickling at Burnham Deepdale in 1828.

The 1861 census for Brancaster Staithe lists George Jickling, mariner, age 41 of Lynn , his wife Anne, age 40 of Thornham and their daughter Anne, 3 years, and son George, 2 years, both of Lynn . See the King's Lynn Jicklings below. Anne Jickling, age 68 of Thornham, was living on Main Street, Brancaster at the time of the 1891 census.
