Addendum:

5 Sep 1998: From Stan L. Langley --

"Within the last two weeks I have acquired a copy of the Will of William Jickling, of the parish of St. Clement Dane (London) who died in 1736. William describes himself as Victualler and appoints as his executors 'Samuel Birch the younger of London Corn Factor and Richard Willoughby of London Broker' together with his 'well beloved wife Judith Jickling'. The beneficiaries of his will are his daughters, Alice and Sarah, who are each to receive 250 pounds, plus interest due from investment when they attain the age of 25 years, the 'residue of my estates whatsoever and wheresoever' being bequeathed to his wife Judith.

"There can be little doubt that William the victualler is he who married in 1725 and that Alice marrying in 1743 is the elder daughter mentioned in the will. It is clear that William must have been in a lucrative way of business, 500 pounds being a substantial sum of money at this period. No clues to the value of his remaining estate, but Judith would not have starved!"
