Lura Jickling
3 Lura Jickling (1852-1912)
Lura was born 3 Oct 1852 [her tombstone reads 1854] to Robert and Julia Jickling. On 9 Apr 1872 she married Joseph T. Newell. At first, they farmed in Richland township on what is now the east side of 24th Street between B and C Avenues, section 7 and an adjoining section. Later they traded their farm with N.G. Pike and in 1896 moved to Portage. They farmed one mile east of Portage Center.
They had three children:
3-1 Marquis J. Newell (1873-1941)
3-2 Minnie Newell (c1875-?) Minnie married
in Oct 1913 and had no children.
3-3 Ulysses Newell (1877-1951)
Lura died on 12 Feb 1912. Her husband Joseph died of a stroke on Christmas Eve 24 Dec 1913.
3-1 Marquis (Mark) Newell (1873-1941)
Mark was born in 1873 to Lura Jickling and Joseph T. Newell. He married Helen W. ____ and lived at 2226 Hartzell St., Evanston, Illinois in the 1930s. They had one daughter -- Pauline. Mark died in California in Dec 1941. A memorial service was held in Evanston, Illinois and he was buried in Spring Grove Cemetery at Bloomingdale, Illinois. Mark's widow Helen died in California in April 1962. A memorial service was held in Bloomingdale. Helen's obituary is included in Annex 8.
3-1-1 Pauline Newell (1909-1991)
Pauline Newell was born in 1909 in Illinois. She married _____ Christensen about 1928 and had two sons, one born about 1929 and the other about 1931. Pauline probably lived in Green Bay, Wisconsin in the early 1930s. Her husband was electrocuted in a bathtub on 30 Dec 1934. Pauline lived in Bloomingdale, Illinois in 1962 at the time of her mother's memorial service.

3-1-2 L.V. Newell (c1912- ?)
Helen Newell's 1962 obituary states that she was survived by her daughter, Pauline Christensen and a son, L.V. Newell of Fort Wayne, Indiana. She also had five surviving grandchildren, which may indicate that L.V. Newell had three children.

Minnie Newell was born about 1875. She married in Oct 1913 and had no children.
3-3 Ulysses S. Newell (1877-1951)
Ulysses was born on 18 Feb 1877 in Richland township to Joseph Newell and Lura Jickling Newell. He married Belle Sweetland in 1912. In 1925 they moved to Coldwater, Michigan and farmed one-half mile south of Coldwater on M-27. Ulysses died on 15 Sep 1951 and was buried in Oak Grove Cemetery (probably at Coldwater). They had five children:
3-3-1 Joseph S. Newell (1913-1993) Joseph lived
for a time in the 1950s at Zeeland, MI. According to Social Security records
he died in Florida in 1993.
3-3-2 Richard H. Newell (c1916-?) Richard lived
at one time in Battle Creek, MI. We have no other record of him.
3-3-3 Donald J. Newell (1919-1966) Donald lived
at one time in Provo, Utah. The Social Security records indicate that he
was born in Michigan in 1919 and died in 1966. We have no other data.
3-3-4 Mrs. Betty Newell Anderson (1921-1992)
Betty lived at one time in Coldwater, MI. According to the Social Security
records, she died in Michigan in 1992.
3-3-5 Mrs. Jean Newell Kitzinger (c1923-?)
Jean lived at one time at Spring Lake, MI.
