Caffeine coursing through my veins
And the smell of tobacco lingering on my fingertips,
I sit under an overcast night sky.
No sign of the stars,
No sign of you.
I watch the street,
Waiting to see your car,
Listening to the beeping from the corner station's gas pumps
And the bar's music cascading over buildings.
The wind bites my arms
And makes me hold tightly unto my tea cup.
I picture you laughing with her,
Struggling with the reality that I am at home,
Waiting for the two of you.
Midnight is an unforgiving hour -
The rush of cars on a busy street tease me
Into a game of "who's car is that?" -
I shake my feet on an unstable deck to keep warm
And wonder if the shadows on the wall would make a good painting.
Planes fly between the clouds to remind me
How dismal this night truly is.
A drop of rain hits my forehead;
I wonder if you remembered your jacket.
Another cup of tea and another cigarette only serve
To make the night drag on.
Still I wait,
Knowing forgiveness comes with your smile
And warm embrace.
