Generation One

DAVID THORNTON. David THORNTON is as far as I have gone back on my Thornton Family. He is believed to have been born about 1783 in South Carolina. He was listed as an unmarried man in an 1803 land lottery in Franklin County, Georgia. It is believed that David married Bathsheba WHITE there, but no marriage record has been found yet. David and Bathsheba had twelve children: 1) Thomas Jefferson b 26 Mar 1807; 2) Henry White b 28 Dec 1808; 3) William b 18 Jun 1811; 4) Presley Wren "P.R." b 22 Jun 1813; 5) Nancy A. b 8 Apr 1815; 6) Elizabeth Stallworth b 2 Mar 1817; 7) George W. b 20 Apr 1919; 8) James M. b 4 Jan 1821; 9) Mary b 11 Jan 1823; 10) Martha M. b 23 Jan 1830; 11) John M. b 23 Jan 1830; and 12) Eppa H. b 7 Jan 1833.They moved to Fayette county, Alabama sometime around 1820 and built the first water mill there. By 1860 he owned 350 acres of land there, and he also owned some land in Yalobusha County, Mississippi. Bathsheba died Jul 1840 and David died 29 Oct 1867. It was said he was beaten badly by "Carpetbaggers" who thought he had money hidden and he didn't recover.

Generation Two

PRESLEY WREN THORNTON. Presley Wren THORNTON was born 22 Jun 1813, probably in Franklin County, Georgia. In most records he is known as P. R. THORNTON. He was the son of David THORNTON and Bathsheba WHITE. On 19 Dec 1833 he married Eleanor DUKE. Where they married is not known. Presley and Eleanor had ten children: 1) John Marshall b 7 May 1835; 2) William Henry b Feb 1837; 3) Wiley D. b ca 1839; 4) Presley Wren Jr b 8 Aug 1841; 5) David; 6) Robert; 7) Mary Elizabeth; 8) James Presley b 16 Aug 1852; 9) Abraham M b Sep 1855; and 10) Grace b ca 1859. Presley moved his family to Yalabusha County, Mississippi soon after he married and they lived there the rest of their lives. Presley died 14 Jul 1883 and Eleanor died 20 Mar 1885. They are buried in the Turkey Creek Cemetery in Pine Valley, Mississippi.

Generation Three

JAMES PRESLEY THORNTON. James Presley THORNTON was born 16 Aug 1852 in Yalabusha County, Mississippi. He was the son of Presley Wren THORNTON and Eleanor DUKE. He married Olivia Jane MILLSAPS about 1874. Date and place are still unknown. James and Olivia had eight children: 1) William Walter b ca 1875; 2) Oscar ?; 3) Daisy Gertrude b 5 Mar 1882; 4) Presley C. b Aug 1884; 5) Myrtle b Jul 1887; 6) Susan b Nov 1889; 7) James Leland b June 1892; and 8) Roy M. b Sep 1895. James and Olivia moved to Los Angeles County, California about 1888. Olivia died about 1898 and James married again about 1899 to May Newell in Clearwater (now Paramount) California. Amy died about 1905 and is buried in the Artesia cemetery. After that he married a woman named Bertha. He must have gone back to Mississippi because none of his grandchildren remember ever meeting him until about 1933 when he came around. He died on 17 Sep 1935 in Glendale, California. James is buried in the Downey Cemetery, Downey, California and there was a "Mrs Thornton" buried with him who had died at an earlier date. It is believed she was Olivia. There is no marker on their graves.

Generation Four

DAISY GERTRUDE THORNTON. Daisy Gertrude THORNTON was born 5 Mar 1882 in Pine Valley, Yalabusha County, Mississippi. She was the daughter of James Presley THORNTON and Olivia Jane MILLSAPS. She was only about eight years old when the family moved to Los Angeles County, California. She married Mack Coy TOLLE on 15 Mar 1899 at Clearwater (now Paramount) California. Daisy and Mack had six children surnamed TOLLE: 1) Lloyd Rollin b 15 Nov 1900; 2) Thelma Iris b 24 May 1902; 3) Leones Lenore b 13 Jul 1903; 4) Walter Brown "Brownie" b 7 Feb 1905; 5) Armon Thornton b 22 Apr 1908; and 6) Thoren Marie b 1926 & d 1927. I was named after her. Mack died 15 Dec 1946 and Daisy died 2 Jan 1945. They are buried on signal in the Long Beach Memorial Cemetery, in the Tolle Plot.
