These are my ancestors who came from Bohemia
FRANK JOHN JONAS was born 6 Mar 1850 in Chynava, County Unhost, Bohemia. He was the son of Vaclav JONAS and Katherine LIPIS. He came to America as a very young man. The details of his coming aren't known. I looked at passenger lists for a long time before I found a history that said he had stowed away on a ship and when the captain found him he was beaten. He lived first in Baltimore, Maryland where he met the SINDELAR family and in September of 1869 he married their daughter Anna Maria SINDELAR. The two families and other relatives headed West to Nebraska where they were the first settlers on Maple Creek in Colfax County. Frank and Anna had eleven children: 1) John B. b 21 Jun 1869; 2) Frank Henry b 15 Aug 1871; 3) James Carl b 6 Mar 1875; 4) Amy b ca 1877; 5) Mary b ca 1879; 6) Steven Pabulius b 3 Dec 1880; 7) Rose H. b 15 Dec 1882; 8) Elloene Paula b ca 1884; 9) Libby b 9 Feb 1887; 10) Clarence b ca 1892; and 11) Florence Constance b Dec 1897. About 1883 Frank and Anna moved even further West to Holt County, Nebraska, and in the 1900s moved again to Lincoln, Nebraska. Frank had been a cobbler in the old country, and did that in Maryland, but over the years he worked at many jobs. He was Postmaster in Midland, Nebraska, worked at a boys school in Kearney, hotel keeper in Butte, Nebraska and after moving to Lincoln he ran a second hand store. His death occurred on 9 Aug 1815 when he was struck and killed by a Chicago Northwestern passenger train at the corner of 17th and Holdredge in Lincoln while walking home from the fairgrounds. He owned property that is now part of the campus of the University of Nebraska. He and Anna are both buried in the Wyuka Cemetery in Lincoln. Anna moved to Los Angeles, California to live with a daughter and died there on 16 Jan 1920. Her body was returned to Lincoln to lie with her husband.
JAMES CARL JONAS. James Carl JONAS was born 6 Mar 1875 in Colfax County, Nebraska. His Bohemian name was Vaclav JONAS He was the son of Frank John JONAS and Anna Maria SINDELAR. He married on 28 Nov 1900 at Naper, Boyd County, Nebraska to Florence Mae CHAFFEE. James and Florence had four children: 1) Harold James b 9 Feb 1902; 2) Orrin Frank "Friday" b 8 Mar 1906; 3) Hugh Maurice "Sparky" b 24 Sep 1909; and 4) Oretha Mae "Jerre" b 6 Nov 1913. James was a veteran of the Spanish American War and served as Private in Company A, 2nd Regiment, Nebraska Infantry for the duration of the war. He homesteaded in Boyd County in the 1890s. He also taught school there, in a one room schoolhouse. He later moved to Lincoln, Nebraska and then to Long Beach, California in 1920. He died in the Long Beach Naval Hospital on 5 Apr 1949. Florence died 27 Jan 1965 and they are both buried at Green Hills Memorial Cemetery in San Pedro, Califonria.
ORETHA MAE JONAS. Oretha Mae Jonas, commonly known as Jerre, was born 16 Nov 1913 at Lincoln, Nebraska. She was the daughter of James Carl JONAS and Florence May CHAFFEE. She came with her family to California at the age of five. She married at Santa Ana, California on 22 Apr 1929 to Armon Thornton TOLLE. Armon and Jerre had three children who are living in 1998. Armon died on 24 Sep 1984 in Carson, California and Jerre died 14 Apr 1996 in West Covina, California. They are buried in the Forest Lawn Cemetery in Glendale, California.

JOSEPH SINDELAR. Joseph SINDELAR was the father of Anna Maria SINDELAR who married Frank John JONAS. He was born 28 Nov 1808 in Bohemia. He came to America aboard the "Johanne Willhelmine" from Oesterreich to Baltimore, Maryland, on 11 Dec 1865. The wife was listed as Mary. She was probably his second wife as she was too young to be the mother of his older children. The exact number of children he had is unknown. All were born in Bohemia. The known children are: 1) Joseph F. b ca 1831; 2) Thomas b ca 1838; 3) Vaclav b 1850; 4) Anna Maria b 25 Jul 1853; and 5) Frank K. b 19 Mar 1862. Joseph and Mary lived a few years in Maryland before moving to Colfax County, Nebraska. He died there on 20 Jan 1881 Mary died in 1898. They are both buried at the Tabor cemetery, about 2 miles SE of Howells, Nebraska.
ANNA MARIA SINDELAR. Anna Maria SINDELAR was born 25 Jul 1853 in Bohemia. She was the daughter of Joseph SINDELAR and Mary (maiden name unknown). She came to America at age 12 with her parents and lived in Baltimore, Maryland for a few years. She was married there in September of 1869 to Frank John JONAS. They moved to Nebraska soon after that. She and Frank had eleven children. Frank died 9 Aug 1915 in Lincoln, Nebraska and Anna died 16 Jan 1920 in Los Angeles, California. Both are buried in the Wyuka Cemetary in Lincoln, Nebraska.
