CHUNKY MITTENS

Size: 8-10 years

Materials:

85g chunky weight wool (main color)

small amount contrast

set of four 3.5mm needles (US 4)

RIGHT MITTEN

With set of four 3.5mm needles cast on 34 sts, join in round.

Work 14 rounds in K1, P1 rib.

Next round: Knit

Next round: Knit 20 sts,M1, K1, M1,Knit to end of round

Next round: Knit

Next round: Knit 20 sts, M1, K3, M1, Knit to end of round

Next round: Knit

Next round: Knit 20, M1, K5, M1, Knit to end of round

(40 sts on needles)

Knit 4 rounds.

Next round: Knit 20, place next 7 sts on a stitch holder, cast

on 7 sts to replace sts on holder, knit to end of round.

Knit 3 rounds.

Next round: K2 mc, K1 contrast (C),( K3 mc, K1C)

to last st, K1mc.

Next round: (K1mc, K1C,) to end of round

Next round: (K1C, K3 mc) to end of round

Next round: (K1 mc, K1C) to end of round.

Next round: K2mc, K1C, ( K3 mc,K1C) to last st, K1 mc.

Next round: (K1mc, K1C) to end of round

Next round: (K1C, K3mc) to end of round.

Break off contrast yarn.

K8 rounds.

DECREASE FOR TOP

Next round: K1, K2tog tbl(through back loop),K14,

K2tog, K2, K2tog tbl, K14, K2 tog, K1

Next round: Knit

Next round: K1, K2 tog tbl, K12, K2 tog, K2, K2 tog tbl,

K12, K2 tog, K1

Next round: Knit

Continue to decrease in this manner until12 sts remain. K 1 round.

Divide the sts evenly on 2 needles and graft top.

THUMB

Knit the 7 sts off st holder, then pick up 7 sts evenly around the

hole for the thumb. Divide on 3 needles and knit 14 rounds.

K2 tog all the way around, then draw the yarn through the

remaining 7 sts and pull up.Cut yarn leaving an end 6 inches long.

( you can use this to reinforce the thumb hole

from the inside of the mitten.)

LEFT MITTEN

Exactly the same as the right but begin the thumb increase after 33sts.,

instead of 20.
