What is
Paintball?
That's a question thousands of people are asking everyday. Paintball is one of the fastest growing outdoor sports in the world. In last fifteen years it has come out of the woods and into the world spotlight. Played in over forty countries by millions of men and women of all ages and lifestyles paintball has grown into the recreational sport of the 90's. Its a game that sets the heart afire with competitive spirit and adventure.
The game itself has many faces and can be played nearly anywhere. It's a combination of "tag", "hide & seek" and "cowboys & Indians". Though much more challenging and sophisticated paintball is basically capture the flag. Typically groups of players will divide into two teams. The number of players per team can vary from two to ten. In some cases team sizes can be in the thousands. Sounds cool doesn't it.
The object of the game is to go out and capture the other teams flag while defending your own. During the course of play you try to eliminate the opposing players by tagging them with a paintball shot from a specially designed air gun. These games can last anywhere from ten minutes to an hour depending on the rules for the particular game being played. The size of the field and the number of players also determine the length and scope of the game. Between games, players break to check their equipment, get more paintballs and share stories of the thrill of victory or the agony of defeat. Win or lose, everyone has a great time and they can't wait to get into the next game.
As mentioned the the sport is played with paintballs and paintball guns. A paintball is a round gelatin capsule containing a non-toxic, non-caustic and water soluble fill. The fill or paint is brightly colored and marks the player when the paintball breaks. When a paintball breaks on a player he or she is eliminated from the game. The coloring rinses easily off of skin and clothing easily using warm water and a mild soap.
Paintball guns or "markers" come in all shapes and sizes. They can be powered by either carbon dioxide(CO2),nitrogen(N2) or compressed air. The preferred power system is generally a large refillable tank or cylinder that enables a player to shoot hundreds of times before needing a refill. Some guns are powered by 12 gram CO2 powerlets that are good for about 20-30 shots. There are pump guns, semi-automatic guns and fully automatic guns to choose from. With a pump gun you have to cock the gun every time you shoot. Semi automatics only require you to cock the gun before the first shot. To keep firing, all you have to do is squeeze the trigger each time you want to shoot another paintball. Fully automatic paintball guns need to be cocked before the first shot but will continue to shoot paintball as long as a player holds the trigger back.
Paintguns range from simple to sophisticated. From inexpensive to expensive, but they all share a common limitation on power and range. The safety limit on the speed of at which a paintball gun propels a paintball is 300 fps(Feet per second). A chronograph is used to check the speed of a paintball as it leaves the barrel of a "marker." Each gun can be adjusted to safely perform under these limits. Because of the speed limitation the maximum range of a paintball gun is about fifty yards.
For safety purposes, paintball players are required to wear goggles specifically designed for paintball. These goggle protect a players eye, face and ears from damage by a paintball. Goggles must be worn at all times while on or near a paintball field while a game is in progress. This includes any target areas and chronograph locations. While not in use each players paintball gun must have a barrel plug placed in the barrel to prevent accidents. A protective facemask is mandatory. Paintball is a safe sport as long as players and spectators observe the common sense rules. Insurance statistics show that as a sport paintball has less injuries than golf, jogging, tennis, swimming and many other sports. Referees on the field enforce all safety and game rules. Players are ejected from the game and the field if they break safety or playing rules.
The game is like chess. Played by young and old alike. Strategy and quick thinking are paramount in this fast paced game. It requires intelligence and determination, not merely strength or speed to be successful in the game of paintball. Paintball is a character building activity that builds self-confidence and leadership skills. It fortifies team play and spirit as well as any other sport out there. Recognized by Fortune 500 companies as stress management tool they recommend it to their staff and management personnel as a fun and exciting outlet for relieving day to day stress.
Give it try. Paintball is an exciting sport and its fun. Once you feel the adrenalin pumping you'll be hooked on the game just like the rest of us.
