The History of Santa Maria Style BBQ

Santa Maria has been Barbeque'n for many years you can find somebody Barbeque'n every weekend up and down Broadway. Broadway is one of the main streets that runs through the center of town, North and South that is, these are all non profit organizations to help Their establishments raise money.

In the late 1800 The Santa Maria Style Barbeque started when local residents would have a branding. After when all the work was done the ranchero's would thank all by having a Barbeque. This began by string cut of beef on skewers or rods and cook the meat over the hot coals of a red oak fire. The skewers were made from green willow. Holes (pits) where then dug into the ground and pieces of red oak filled the trench and the fire was started. When the fire burned down to coals were then raked level, the green willow skewers with cuts of beef where place over the coals.

The story said that in 1907 a man named Robert Franklin Martin built a thirteen room home for his wife and their eight children in Santa Maria. The house was sold and was purchased by a group of businessmen in 1919, They wanted a place to "get away from it all" where they could play poker, and discuss the issues of the day. This became the Santa Maria Club. The 117-members club was incorporated in 1920. The club had a huge barbecue pit, it also had many small barbecue pits for small gatherings. The Santa Maria Club started a Stag Barbecue on April 1,1931. After that the club held a barbecue on the second Wednesday of every month. The cost was $1.25 plus tax the barbecue dinners consisted of prime rib steak, macaroni and cheese, beans, green salad, salsa, french bread and coffee. This is where the legacy of the Santa Maria Style Barbecue began!
