Hendrie's Guests Are As Vast As Phil's Mind
Here are more biographies of some one-time guests on the Bill Henry Show. Enjoy them as we have. They are truly as unique as Phil Hendrie is to American radio.
Orville James Simpson
Orville J. Simpson was suing a local Chinese restaurant because he almost choked to death while eating a cookie offered him after dinner. He was shocked to find out that they had put paper in the center of the cookie ( the fortune!!) and he choked trying to eat the paper. Had it not been for Chou Lai, a kitchen helper in the restaurant who performed CPR on him, he would have died. The only benefit Simpson got from this experience was that he and Chou Lai now live together!
Mavis Gardner
Mavis Gardner was on the show urging people to not get animals spayed and neutered. She is with an organization called "Celebrate Life". Doing so, according to Mavis Gardner, was taking away life. As time went on during the show, Mavis spoke about being able to use animals to help people, such as being skinned for their fur. One appalled caller was quite shocked and became even more shocked when Mavis suggested that the caller's dog along with two more could make a nice fur coat for homeless people.
Art (last name not permitted by airline) of LA
Art, who was not allowed to use his last name nor the airline involved, called Phil to talk about an event that occurred about four years ago. He was on a flight from San Francisco to Denver on a 747. Early in the flight, Art had asked the stewardess for two sets of pilot wings for his kids ( one which he put on his jacket). Later he went to the first class section to go to the bathroom. Upon leaving the toilet, a first class stewardess rushed to him to tell him his help was needed. She took him to the cockpit where he found both the pilot and co-pilot unconscious. One had a heart attack and the other had food poisoning. The stewardess told Art he would have to pilot the 747!Art immediately pulled the pilot from his seat and sat there ( even though, as a CPA he had never flown anything before). He called the control tower in Denver since they were about a half hour out of Denver. They told him to pull the plane out of auto pilot and they would talk him thru the final flight and landing. He did and told them his altitude and that the plane was at about a 1/4 tank of fuel. He was told to dump most of the fuel for safety reasons and he flew over the ocean and did as they told him. He then proceeded to land the plane safely and save all 100 people on the aircraft.
The calls from commercial pilots overwhelmed Phil. The gist of their arguments with this Art guy were that there is no ocean within half an hour of Denver, the 747 has autopilot which will fly and land the plane and finally that there must be a flight engineer on a 747 who can land the plane and stewardesses are trained to make emergency landings. Pilots also laughed at the quarter tank story since planes do not have indicators like that. Art said that pilots always scoff at his story since it makes them look bad! He showed that anyone can fly and land a 747.
Clara Barrett
Clara Barrett is a member of the Joyful Union Congregation Church, a Pentacostal Church in Bell Gardens, like many of Phil's guests. She called Phil to discuss Reverend Jesse Jackson's trip to Belgrade to rescue three "white faces"! Callers were upset that Clara brought race into the issue.Clara was involved in the protests in Riverside over the Miller shooting by the police. She defended the Reverend Al Sharpton and Dick Gregory being there because the people of Riverside "need some explaining" since "they are a simple people in Riverside."
Clara is also a teacher and weighed in with Phil on kids with ADD. Her approach is not to use ritalin or other calming drugs. Instead Barrett believes putting donkey ears on a ADD child acting up will solve the problem. She also told one caller of an adopted ADD child that when you adopt you always get "damaged goods".
Clara is the head of Media Microscope, a black media watch group. This group pushes for more blacks in the movies. Clara is particularly upset with Episode 1 of the new Star Wars trilogy which has only one African-American, Samuel L. Jackson, in the film and he is on for only seven minutes. She says that blacks are difficult to film and therefore raise post production costs. But she believes George Lucas has enough money to absorb the additional costs.
She also would not take a black child to see this movie about a bunch of white men running around in white gowns.
Roland Howe
Roland Howe is with The American Council on Infant Safety. His organization is looking at innovative ways to provide cheap but safe means of child care. Some of their ideas include child bins which would go above the luggage racks in airplanes. They also have child lockers which would cost about 75 cents an hour, far cheaper than other child care means. The children would be very safe with nothing in the locker to hurt them. Children should only remain in the lockers for about three hours. Callers were in disbelief about this guy!!
Bob Green
Bob Green is a retired teacher who spent 23 years in the teaching profession. He now lives in Scottsdale, Arizona. He had called in to make remarks about the recent case of a substitute teacher at a school in LA who had stripped in front of his fourth grade class.It has been alleged that he then was inappropriate in his behavior. Green, although not condoning this guy's behavior, said that teachers had to push the envelope to keep kids attention.
Al Darkman
Al Darkman runs a plumbing service in Alhambra and sponsored the live broadcast from Mann's Chinese Theatre on May 18. He was offering half off on replacing all your pipes in honor of the new Star Wars movie.
Austin Webb
Austin Webb is with the Irish Folk Dancing Group of Santa Clarita, a group that dances every Friday night at the Red Lobster in Santa Clarita. He also runs Austin Webb Cabinet Making Company. He called in very concerned that Michael Flatley had stolen his style of Irish folk dancing from Webb and his dance troupe. In fact they had danced for Flatley at the Macaroni Grill many years before he became famous. Flatley then started using Webb's style of dancing which includes keeping one's hands down. Webb wanted to sue Flatley for theft of his ideas.Webb is quite versatile as he also dances with Santa Clarita Latin Dancing Club. He loves dancing the mamba to Ricky Martin's La Vida Loca
Dr. Jim Saddler
Dr. Jim Saddler from San Francisco is a Democratic political strategist. He provides insights on various political issues. He called in after the Balkan War ended to talk about what "brass balls" Clinton had to wage only an air war. He also infuriated military people and dependents who called in to complain about Saddler's take on things.My Favorite Web Sites
