In loving memory of my sister, my best friend, killed senselessly by a drunk driver.

A sister is a gift of God, sent from above to make life worthwhile here below. Anonymous

This page is a tribute to a beautiful sister, daughter, mother, aunt and friend that was killed by a hit and run drunk driver on July 18th, 1995. She was struck down while riding bikes with her boyfriends two sons, Justin-9 years old, and Christopher-7 years old. Justin Carson was also killed, and Christopher critically injured. After a long and painful several months Christopher did physically recover. He will, however, never recover emotionally from the experience of riding bikes with his brother and step-mom one day, hearing a terrible noise, and turning around to look, in time to see both of them and their bikes fly across the hood and windshield of a car coming straight at him! Justin and Christopher were very close brothers and friends. They were like “two peas in a pod”, inseparable…even looked so much like twins, I had a hard time telling, which was which! My sister was literally my other half, my soul mate, my best friend and my idol. She turned 33 on July 1st, and was killed 17 days later. Sandra was a single mom and left behind her daughter Jessica, my parents, Harold and Helga Spence, my son Donnie, and myself. My name is Connie. My family has been devastated by her loss. On the following pages you will find pictures and poetry and stories that reflect on the loss, celebrate the life, and share the love for my sister. It is my hope, in some small way, she can continue to have an impact on people’s lives. We were blessed to have been the ones who had her as ours for 33 years. Our lives will never be the same, and there will always be an empty part in each one of us, in every day of our lives, without her.

A Letter From Heaven
To my dearest family, some things I’d like to say. But first of all, to let you know, that I’ve arrived okay. I’m writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above. Here, there are no more tears of sadness; here it’s just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy just because I’m out of sight. Remember that I am with you every morning, noon, and night. That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through. God picked me up and hugged me and said, “I welcome you.”
“It’s good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone. As for your dearest family, they’ll be here later on. There’s so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.” God gave me a list of things that he wished for me to do. And foremost on the list was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day’s chores put to flight, God and I are closest to you….in the middle of the night.
When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years, because you’re only human, they are bound to bring you tears. But don’t be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain. Remember there would be no flowers unless there was some rain. I wish I could tell you all that God has planned. If I were to tell you, you wouldn’t understand. But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is over, I’m closer to you now than I ever was before.
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb. But together we can do it by taking one day at a time. It was always my philosophy and I’d like it for you too: That as you give unto the world, the world will give to you. If you can help somebody who’s in sorrow and pain then you can say to God at night…”My day was not in vain.” And now I am contented that my life was worthwhile, knowing as I passed along the way I made somebody smile.
So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low, just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go. When you’re walking down the street and you’ve got me on your mind, I’m walking in your footsteps only half a step behind. And when it’s time for you to go from that body to be free, remember you’re not going….you’re coming here to me.

Perhaps strength doesn't reside in having never been broken
...but in the courage required to grow strong in the broken places....

For there is no friend like a sister,
In calm or stormy weather,
To cheer one on the tedious way,
To fetch one if one goes astray,
To lift one if one totters down,
To strengthen whilst one stands. Author Unkown
