When I moved (at age 20), I made sure the new house had a pool. It's 35 ft. long, 15 ft. wide and 9 1/2 ft. deep. I swim 20-30 laps a day from May-Sept. It gives me the exercise I need and I love jumping into a cool pool on a HOT day. As you've probably already figured out, Summer is my favorite time of year. I 'love' hot weather. I decided to join the YMCA so I could swim in the off-season since we don't heat our pool. It's an Olympic-size pool and I can (usually) swim the entire length of it without taking a breath...at least for the 1st lap. LOL

On a Monday morning in November 1984, I woke up with a
horrendous headache. I've never been able to handle them very well but 'this' one was a doozy! I was rushed to the hospital and found out that the shunt had stopped functioning. I needed emergency surgery to replace it. Neither I, nor my parents were 'ever' told that it would eventually need to be replaced. So needless to say, I wasn't 
. And they wanted to operate that afternoon! That was a little too soon for me so I asked if it could wait til morning. It never hurts to ask, right? They said that was acceptable. Then I asked, "Can I have some aspirin now?" LOL!
That operation/recovery was the 1 of the worst I've ever gone through. The doctor said I would be able to go back to college after 1 week of rest but I had to drop out in the middle of the semester. I was headachy, dizzy, nauseous and light-headed. I went back to work after a month but driving the 2 1/2 miles home one day, I decided that I'd had enough of the pain. I was SO close to hitting an oncoming car head-on. Obviously, I didn't - but it woke me up. I have never been one to give up and I wasn't going to die at the age of 20.
It took me 3 months to get back to college and 5 months to fully recover. I've been thinking lately that I'm living on borrowed time. LOL! The 1st shunt lasted me 20 years so I'm due for another revision. The doctor said since I went so long before the 1st one went bad that he couldn't predict how long I would go without needing another one. Hopefully, a long, long time!
One good thing that came out of me having the surgery was that I would meet the guy who would turn out to be (to this day) my best friend. When I returned to college, I had to make up some classes and in 1 of them there was a guy named Julio. I had the 'biggest' crush on him. Probably because he paid attention to me when I wasn't feeling my best. We'd walk to/from classes together and after getting to know each other, realized that we had grown up in the same town. Anyway, we graduated and kept in touch. 2 years after meeting Julio, I met his brother, Michael. You thought the best friend was Julio, didn't you?
Michael is 4 years younger than I am and we have 'absolutely' nothing in common. LOL! Which is probably why we get along so well. For years, our families thought that we'd eventually fall in love but it never happened. I don't think either Julio, Michael or I ever thought that we'd still be in each other's lives as long as we have been. But it's made life interesting and we've have our good 'and' bad times together. I wouldn't have missed it for anything.
Life presents no limitations.
You create those yourself.
I began having severe back/tailbone pain in early 1994 which was diagnosed as 'tethered cord'. I had scheduled surgery for October but the pain got so bad that I moved it up 4 months to June (1 month before my 30th birthday). The surgery got rid of my back pain but I developed scar tissue that is causing constant pain in the back of my right thigh. It's very similar to Sciatica pain and if you've ever had that, you know how painful it can be! I've been in a (bright red) wheelchair ever since. Ending up in the chair wasn't a totally devastating experience because I've been disabled all my life.
It 'did' take me about a year to come to the realization (and to accept) that I wasn't going to walk again. When something life-changing like this happens, it 'is' going to affect you. But, in a way, I was almost expecting it. While in my teens, I had recurring dreams in which I couldn't see myself living past the age of 30. Most women dread turning 30, but I was 'thrilled' because it proved the dream wrong. LOL! And I had a nice, quiet birthday party with about 8 of my closest friends.
I had been driving since I was 19 and after the surgery it took me a while to want to drive again. I got full hand-controls for Christmas 1996. The first time I drove I was with the brother who had taught me. We were in a vacant parking lot, just driving back and forth. It was 2 1/2 years since I had been behind the wheel. I kept saying, "I feel like I'm going SO fast." He kept saying, "You're not." I finally got up the nerve to look at the speedometer and I was going 35 m.p.h.! LOL!
It took me several months to get used to driving a completely different way - "Look ma, no feet!" LOL! I've been tossing around the idea of getting back on the freeway. But the speed limit has gone up 10 m.p.h. since I last drove freeways. This 'is' also L.A. which can be a little scary on the roads. I guess I'm going to wait awhile for the next step. I'm still young so I have plenty of time anyway.
I'm in the market for a new wheelchair because 'Old Faithful' has finally given up the good fight. It's 13 years old and is well traveled. It's been to Mexico (2x), Minnesota (3x), Connecticut (2x), Colorado (3x), Oregon (2x), Hawaii (1x), New Mexico (1x), Arizona (1x). It has definitely earned it's share of frequent flyer miles! Even though blue is my favorite color, I chose blood red because it gets me noticed. Actually, being in a chair in the 1st place gets me noticed. LOL! I'd like to try another color but after all these years, red is kind of my signiture color.
That brings me to another amusing episode in my life. Michael was complaining about an ankle injury he had sustained about a year after my surgery. I kept telling him that he was trying to get sympathy out of the wrong person. He said, "You don't know what it's like not being able to walk." My eyes popped open and I replied, "Excuse me?" He realised his mistake and asked, "Oh my God, did I say that?" To this day, we laugh about it. I will 'never' let him live it down!
He's lucky we're such good friends and that I have an exceptional sense of humor!
Now back to a little seriousness. The worst part about being in a wheelchair is the so-called 'handicapped accessible' restroom. Most stalls are more than adequate but some don't have room to let me turn around or even close the stall door. I guess as long as the wheelchair itself fits, that's considered 'accessible'. It's been suggested that I get a job designing handicapped bathrooms. Would that I could! It's also frustrating when a non-handicapped person uses the stall and gets territorial about it. I've been yelled at to 'hold your horses'. Disabled people have a hard time holding anything because of nerve damage whether from injury, or in my case, a birth defect.
When I knock on the stall door, I expect the person inside to speed it up. If they don't, I'll say something like, "If you're not handicapped, you're not supposed to use this stall". But they don't seem to understand what the big deal is. One woman even said, "Just because *you're* in a wheelchair doesn't mean that I can't use that stall." I wonder if she ever realized what a stupid thing that was to say? I hope she does and feels guilty every time she uses a handicapped stall. But then again, someone with that mentality doesn't have a conscience so I doubt she 'would' feel guilty. I wish people would take a minute to think about/imagine what it would be like to be in my position.
I got so fed up with having to go to the bathroom so often and finding an accessible bathroom that I had bladder augmentation surgery on Feb. 3rd, 2000. I was in the hospital for 16 days and the recovery took 3-4 months minimum. It was 'the' worst hospitalization and recovery of all my surgeries. The actual day of surgery was the best day of my entire hospital stay. Probably because I was 'out of it' most of the time. LOL!
People kept saying, "It will be worth it in the end" but it took me almost 2 years from the original surgery to actually admit that I'm glad I did it. Well, what I actually said was, "I'm glad I did it but I'm not happy about what I had to go through to get to this point." LOL!
A strong woman has faith that she is strong enough for the journey.
But a woman of strength has faith that it is in the journey that she will become strong!
The surgery didn't 'take' as well as we had hoped so I
went into the hospital as an outpatient (home the same day) on June 20th, 2000 for a minor repair. I went in again on Feb. 1st, 2001 for a revision. I was out of the hospital in 5 days and driving once again in 1 month. Things are MUCH improved and 'now' I can honestly say, "I'm glad I did it and it was worth what I went through (the 2nd time around)." LOL!
On the positive side, being in a wheelchair 'does' have some perks. Parking is easy (when idiots don't take up the handicap parking spaces). That's another 'pet peeve' of mine - people who think nothing of parking in spaces reserved for disabled people. I love catching them in the act. I can vent my frustration and make them feel really lousy in the process. Makes my day! LOL! It may sound harsh but they should know better. O.K. - 'nuf said. I'm getting off my soapbox now.
Another perk is that I can 'usually' get anyone to do almost anything I want them to do - that's where the spoiled rotten part comes in! LOL!
Update:
It's Spring 2005, and I just got some 'excellent' news! Having Hydrocephalus has always been on the back of my mind. Every time I had a headache I'd wonder, "Is something wrong with the shunt?" Well, I developed a headache in January (that's good news? LOL!) that just wouldn't go away. I visited several doctors in 'process of elimination' mode. The 2nd doctor I saw was a Neurosurgeon who ordered a CT scan.
I went back to see him later that day, after the test, hoping for the best. Well, I got it. He said, "You no longer 'have' hydrocephalus. Sometimes it self-corrects." Color me surprised!
It's a little hard to believe because it has been a part of my life for my 'entire' life but I'm sure I'll get used to the idea. Btw, they're still trying to find out why I'm feeling this way, but as the Neurosurgeon said, "At least you don't have a brain tumor and you're not going to die." All I could say to that was, "Yup!" LOL!

Struggle
A man found a cocoon of a butterfly. One day a small opening appeared, he sat and watched the butterfly for several hours as it struggled to force its body through that little hole. Then it seemed to stop making any progress. It appeared as if it had gotten as far as it could and it could go no arther.
The man decided to help the butterfly, so he took a pair of scissors and snipped off the remaining bit of the cocoon. The butterfly then emerged easily. But it had a swollen body and small, shriveled wings.
The man continued to watch the butterfly because he expected that, at any moment, the wings would enlarge and expand to support the body, which would contract in time.
Neither happened! In fact, the butterfly spent the rest of its life crawling around with a swollen body and shriveled wings. It never was able to fly.
The man in his kindness and haste did not understand that the restricting cocoon and the struggle required for the butterfly to get through the tiny opening were nature's way of forcing fluid from the body of the butterfly into its wings so that it would be ready for flight once it achieved its freedom from the cocoon.
Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our life. If nature allowed us to go through our life without any obstacles, it would cripple us. We would not be as strong as what we could have been.
And we could never fly...
Who I Am"
I am not my hair, my eyes, my nose or my mouth. I am
not my skin or the shape of any of my body parts. I am
not the IQ of my brain.
I am not the sound of my voice or the volume of my
laughter. I am not my strengths or any of my
weaknesses. I am not the level of my skills.
The temple of my physical makeup is a culmination of
genetics. It reveals nothing about the person who
resides within. I take no credit or point no blame for
the way I look. My temple is perfect, as is.
This body is not who I am. It is an exquisitely
perfect dwelling for my soul. Everything about it is exactly as it should be. No other, anywhere, ever, could serve my soul as well.
I am not anything you can see with your eyes or touch
with your hands. Should you judge me by that criteria,
you will never know me.
I am not a dumping ground for bias that's based on a
man-made standard, and I do not accept the prejudice
it creates.
I am a union of body, mind and spirit, a trio, not a
solo.
To know me, is to know yourself.
Those who hear the voice of their soul, recognize the
song in mine. They do not stop at the front door and
judge me by the dwelling in which I reside. With a
humble sense of honor, they knock upon the door and
ask to come in.
The judgment of others does not change who I am. Quite
the opposite is true. It reveals who they are.
Those who deem me unworthy at a glance and pass me on
by, have my blessing to keep walking, for they have a
long way to go. They have not reached the point in
their journey where they are able to see and
appreciate me for who I am.
I will accept no less.
"A Tribute To My Mom"
This year, nearly 100,000 women become mothers of handicapped children. Did you ever wonder how mothers of handicapped children are chosen?
Somehow, I visualize God hovering over Earth selecting his instruments for propagation with great care and deliberation. As He observes, he instructs his angels to make notes in a giant ledger.
"Armstrong, Beth, son, patron saint - Matthew. Forrest, Marjorie, daughter, patron saint - Cecelia. Rutledge, Carrie, twins, patron saint...give her Gerard. He's used to profanity."
Finally, he passes a name to an angel and smiles, "Give her a handicapped child."
The angel is curious, "Why this one, God? She's so happy."
"Exactly," says God. "Could I give a handicapped child a mother who does not know laughter? That would be cruel."
"But, has she patience?" asks the angel.
"I don't want her to have too much patience or she will drown in a sea of self-pity and despair. Once the shock and resentment wear off, she'll handle it."
"But, Lord, I don't think she even believes in you."
God smiles, "No matter. I can fix that. This one is perfect. She has just enough selfishness."
The angel gasps, "Selfishness? Is that a virtue?"
God nods. "If she can't separate herself from the child occasionally, she'll never survive. Yes, here is a woman whom I will bless with a child less than perfect. She doesn't realize it yet, but she is to be envied. She will never take for granted a 'spoken word.' She will never consider a 'step' ordinary. When her child says 'Momma' for the first time, she will be present at a miracle and know it! When she describes a tree or a sunset to her blind child, she will see it as few people ever see my creations."
"I will permit her to see clearly the things I see...ignorance, cruelty, prejudice...and allow her to rise above them. She will never be alone. I will be at her side every minute of every day of her life, because she is doing my work as surely as she is here by my side."

The 'Courage' quote is my favorite saying. I've been told many times how brave I am, but I'm VERY good at fooling people. LOL! After all, April Fool's Day 'is' my favorite unofficial holiday. My favorite official (American) holiday is the Fourth of July - which just happens to be my Mom's birthday.
Of course, it has 'nothing' to do with fact that MY birthday is just days later!

The Birthday Numbers
The date on which you were born can tell you a great deal about yourself. It has its greatest influence during the middle years of life (from your late 20's to your late 50's) - the years when we are the most productive. The following is what each date of any month is said to mean. I have found 2 interpretations so see which one is right for you:
1st - suggests an increased measure of executive ability and leadership qualities. A birthday on day 1 of any month gives greater will-power and self-confidence, and very often a rather original approach. This energy may diminish your ability and desire to handle details, preferring instead to paint with a broad brush. You may be sensitive, but your feelings stay rather repressed.
It is doubtful that you have put all your power to use. You must take care not to use it only for yourself. Interested mainly in your own development, you are independent, forceful, and strong-willed. You are a planner rather than a builder and are better at diagnosing than treating. You prefer mental activity to manual labor, although you keep busy physically because of all your energy. You rarely express your emotions because that would indicate weakness, which you hate. 2nd - adds a degree of emotion, sensitivity, and intuition. The 2 is a very social number allowing you to make friends easily and quickly.
