Lou Dobbs: CNN's Xenophobe-in-Residence

Lou Dobbs (Lou Dobbs Tonight, 11/10/05), absurd tirade against holiday’s such as St. Patrick’s Day and Columbus Day that celebrate “a distant history”: “Every St. Patrick's Day, every Columbus Day…, I see people celebrating a distant history and their lineage, presumably, that has nothing to do with celebrating America, and I find that astonishing. Frankly, I resent those kinds of holidays…. Well, let me explain to you why I don't like it, and I have just a visceral reaction to it, and that is that this is a country that is so focused on the differences among our 300 million citizens, we don’t celebrate enough our commonality, our similarities, our bond. And I become very sensitive to this.” (Media Matters for America, http://mediamatters.org/items/200511140004)…. It seems Dobbs’ nativist vision of a red-white-and-blue, apple-pie-eating America excludes even the Italian credited with “discovering” America in the first place (It’s not clear where Mr. Dobbs thinks elements of “American” culture such as the English language and the idea of democracy come from. He must think they are native to the United States, just as prison labor and intellectual property theft are native to Communist China). In any case, “commonality” for Dobbs is clearly limited to those things and ideas supposedly contained within the borders of a monocultural, English-speaking, capitalistic United States of America and of history since 1776. All else—any acknowledgement of or identification with a world beyond that of the modern USA—is abolished, obliterated.... ....
