President's Message
Well, I hope your trees are getting more attention than mine. My work has
kept me busy enough that I've barely had time to keep them watered and
fertilized. Most of my recent Monday nights have been spent in computer
rooms instead of bonsai workshops, so I feel a bit out of touch with the
club too. We have at least a few new members that I haven't even been able
to meet yet! I think things will be back to normal soon so I?m hoping to
get back on schedule and catch up with my trees and the rest of the club.
Diablo Bonasai Club participated in two very nice events recently that
were successful because of the many members who gave their time to make
them work. They'll be mentioned in more detail later in this issue, but
let me take this opportunity to thank Norm Wanek for coordinating the bonsai
display at the Danville Fine Arts Gallery, and Bob Evans for taking care
of the details at the Cherry Blossom Festival.
Watch out for the rising temperatures this month. We've had it easy
this spring with our mild weather, but now it's time to be careful. One
hot day without water is too much for most potted bonsai.
Member's Garden Tour This Month
We've got a great day of touring scheduled for Saturday May 22nd. Put
the date on your calendar and be sure and join us to visit Norm Wanek,
Gale Newcomb, and the Montoyas. Bob Evans contributed the following details:
The spring garden tour has been set for Saturday May 22, starting at
10am at Gale Newcomb's garden, bonsai and Koi ponds. We will then go to
Norm Wanek's at 11am, and finish at Bernard and Mineko Montoya?s at 12:30pm.
Gale and Norm live in Danville and the Montoya?s live in Livermore. Maps
have been passed out in the combined and advanced meetings in April and
will be available at all May meetings. If you don?t get to a meeting and
need a map, call Bob Evans at (925) 820-0268.
We?ll be eating at the Montoya's so pack a lunch and enjoy the nice
setting.
More Thanks
Also from Bob Evans:
:
I wish to thank the following club members for either showing trees
or doing floor watch at the Cherry Blossom Festival Bonsai exhibit in San
Francisco in April: Norm Wanek, Tom fong, Mineko and Bernard Montoya,
Paul Francis, Byron Nobriga, Tami Self-Vigil, Jack Mahshi, Bill Magee, Don
Meeker and Jim Stalker.
And from Norm Wanek:
Danville Fine Arts Gallery Display
Our exhibit at the Danville Fine Arts Gallerty was very successful.
For a six week period (4days a week) we had 3 trees on display. The
trees were rotated each week. Many visitors and groups of schoolchildren
were able to view our trees along with a wide variety of other art works.
Thanks to the following members who exhibited their threes: Bob
Evans, Tom Fong, Bernard and Mineko Montoya, Gail Newcomb and Norm Wanek.
