He was given just a week to engrave his Derek Walcott stamp. The reason was that the Nobel Prize for literature was to be commemorated for the first time by a stamp, at the same time as when the award was made. Piotr Naszarkowski is satisfied with the stamp and feels that he succeeded well in reproducing Walcott’s original manuscript, on which every detail of the text has been reproduced on the engraving.

Portraits are another type of motif in which it is essential to retain the character of the original in an even more distinct way. You can see straight away whether its a good likeness or not, says Piotr Naszarkowski. One of the portrait stamps with which he is particularly happy is that of the Nobel laureate Alva Myrdal.

Piotr Naszarkowski prefers to use the classical line engraving method in his work. He learnt this in the early 1980’s at the Polish bank note printing works.

Before leaving Poland he engraved about ten stamps. However, Piotr Naszarkowski’s studies at the Academy of Arts in Warsaw were not especially concentrated on graphical work. He also studied design, furnishing architecture, and theatre and television scenography, and after graduation he started to work as a scenographer.

Just by chance he heard about a vacancy for a bank note engraver at the printing works, and in this way embarked on a career as an engraver.
