For parents, we are called to:

"Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not turn from it"
                                                                                -- Proverbs 22:6

These days, there seems to be more insight into the psychology of raising children, and sometimes, even conflicting theories from considered authorities. Times are challenging, and raising children is an experience that doesn't get much easier, just different. One rule of thumb that hasn't lost its ground on advice is this famous proverb. There are no perfect earthly parents, but only one perfect Parent. To set all "trains" of parenting on this perfect Parent is a strong pathway for teaching love.

This poem portrays a sense of helpful encouragement and "reminders" in the influence of children. The day is still young...remember what it was like to be a kid?!

If I had my child to raise over again,
I'd build self-esteem first,
and a house later,
I'd finger-paint more,
and point the finger less,
I'd do less correcting
and more connecting.
I'd take my eyes off my watch,
and watch with my eyes.
I would care to know less
and know to care more.
I'd take more hikes and fly more kites.
I'd stop playing serious,
and seriously play.
I would run through more fields,
and gaze at more stars.
I'd do more hugging and less tugging.
I'd see the oak tree in the acorn more often,
I would be firm less often,
and affirm much.
I'd model less about the love of power,
and more about the power of love.
