About the Santa Barbara Youth Symphony

The Youth Symphony is composed of approximately 65 young musicians who rehearse weekly during the school year and perform several major concerts during each season. The major goal of the Youth Symphony is to provide an orchestral experience for students from the Central Coast that will supplement school musical opportunities.

The present Youth Symphony, based on previous youth orchestras conducted by Dan Kepl and others, was established in 1974 with the encouragement of the Santa Barbara Symphony Conductor, Ronald Ondrejka. Former music directors include Edwin Outwater, Dr. Jack Ullom, Teri Murai, Clifford Athorn, Elise Unruh, Varujan Kojian and Dr. Stephen Dombek. Our current director is Alfredo Oyaguez.

To supplement the Youth Symphony, a Chamber Orchestra was revived a couple of seasons ago. This gives some of our string players an intense introduction to chamber literature. They will perform in January. In addition, solo opportunities and participation in small ensemble groups offer Youth Symphony members valuable performance experience. These groups are available to perform at various venues or in a recital format.

In a continuing effort to introduce music to the young people of our community, the Youth Symphony provides After-School String Workshops, giving students in the Santa Barbara and Goleta School Districts the opportunity to begin the study of string instruments.

Graduates of the Youth Symphony leave with a greater love and understanding of classical music. Several former members have gone on to play with major orchestras, while others pursue solo careers. many more students continue avocational participation and study of music.
