Bob Marley,(1945-81), Jamaican reggae singer, guitarist, and composer. He was born Robert Nesta Marley in Rhoden Hall, St. Ann, Jamaica. Marley was learning the welding trade in Kingston when he formed his first harmony group, the Rudeboys (1961), who later became known as the Wailers. In 1967 he converted from Christianity to the Rastafarian religion. Marley recorded Catch a Fire (1972),Burnin' (1973), Natty Dread (1975), and Live (1975). In 1976 he became involved in politics; while preparing to give a free concert in Kingston in December, he was shot and wounded. He subsequently went to Europe, where he found a new degree of popular success in England, Sweden, the Netherlands, and West Germany (now part of the united Federal Republic of Germany). Rastaman Vibrations (1976) anda U.S. tour brought him unmatched success with reggae fans in the United States, which continued with Exodus (1977), Babylon by Bus (1978), Kaya (1978), Uprising (1980), and reissues of earlier work. Marley's songs ranged from love songs to social commentary to calls for revolution. He died in Miami of cancer in 1981)
