OUR HOUSE

The woman's fear made her heart beat rapidly as she sat in her car watching the windows of the old farm house spill soft inviting light out onto the cold frozen earth while the harsh winter afternoon swiftly turned to darkness. How long she sat there she did not know, except her package of cigarettes was running low and she was getting colder by the minute. Several cars had come into the yard and the people in them had gone into the house without so much as a how do you do in her direction. More lights had come on in the house making it seem even warmer. Twice she had turned on the motor of her car to leave, but something kept her sitting where she was.

How had her life turned into such a mess. Only a few months before she had been sitting on top of the world. She had a good business, money to burn, friends around all the time, then boom, the bottom fell out of her world. She had lost her business because the economy went spiraling down like a whirlpool, the money was all but gone, and friends.... well friends were something that were there only when the money and good times were there. She was completely alone. If only her girl friend had stuck beside her......if only the money had held out....if only......why did life consist of so many if onlys.

She had been sitting in a bar drinking the courage to end all her misery when she had over heard some one talking about this place that you could go if you were down on your luck, needed a place to stay, a meal, or just someone to talk to. For the first time since she had been sitting there in her car, she noticed that most of the women going inside were alone. As the front door of the farm house opened she heard laughter and music coming from inside.

Gathering her last shred of courage, the woman opened her car door and got out onto the dirt parking area. Slowly she walked to the front door of the house. Hesitating at the front door she looked back at her car. It wasn’t too late to change her mind. No one had seen her. All she had to do was walk down the stairs, get back in her car and leave. No one would know. No one would care. She would just leave and try to live with a broken heart, alone, as usual.

"Its now, or never" she thought. Opening the door she stepped into the front hall. To her right she saw a few women talking in the soft lights of the living room. She could hear other women laughing somewhere else in the house. The smell of coffee beckoned her towards the kitchen and as she walked she caught sight of women playing pool in a room to her left. As she stepped into the kitchen, a warm friendly voice greeted her..."we are so glad you decided to come in.....make yourself comfortable.....how may we help you......." Those were the most comforting words I had heard in a long time. At last I had found a place where I belonged. No one would come out to get me. I had to do this all by myself. Life is full of decisions. We dont always make the ones we want but hopefully the ones we make are right for us and the people we come in contact with.

My Sisters House may not be the place for you if you like to be alone. It may not be for you if you like hiding from the world or not talking to others who share and have the same feelings as you. But, if you should find yourself as the woman above, only you can choose to come in from the night. All of us who work with My Sisters House take this time to wish all of you a happy holiday season!
