Cynthia Quintana, the Principal of McLane is continuing this tradition, by helping the Highlander Bands. Offering financial, as well as spiritual support, the Students know that Ms. Quintana, is a person they can depend upon to be there for them. Our Band Instructor is Tim Giannopolus. Mr. "G" as the students fondly refer to him is a musician in his own right, playing the bass with the Fresno Philharmonic Orchestra, and with other groups as well. Mr. "G" is the father of the group, and when not teaching is usually surrounded by a group of his students.

This year's Highlanders are a diversified group. Our "Scottish" Group is a mixture of race, Southeast Asian, Hispanic, African American, and Caucasian. The characteristic that makes our group more outstanding than other Scottish groups, is that our Pipers only have months to learn to play the pipes, and most Pipers have years of training on a "chanter" before they are allowed to even try a set of pipes. And our Dancers win medals and trophies after months of training while competing against Dancers who have danced since they were "toddlers". The Scottish Drum Major is Sophia Baraza. The Pipe Major for the first half of this year was Cynthia Veloz, who graduated a year early, and is now attending California State University: Fresno. The Pipe Major now is Zachary Everhart. The other pipers are John David Liberty, Crystal Silva, Max Medina, Aaron Martinez, and Steven Camancho. The Bass Drummer is Mary Brito, Tenor Drummers, Heather Lewelling, and Jeanette Toledo, and Snare Drummers, Alex Toledo, and David Akuido. The Dancers consist of Head Dancer, Patrick Geary, Assistant-Head Dancers Jackie Ellis, and Sarah Tapney, who have won numerous Trophies, and medals in dance competition. The other medal winning dancers are Soupy Boupavong, Mai Xiong, Jenny Chang, Go-Go Her, Felicia Cerda, Becky Foster, and Youa Moua.

Last August, while performing at the Scottish Games in Pleasanton, California, the group was acknowledged by the Clan Maclaine of Lochbuie, to whom Charles L. McLane was affiliated. They were so impressed with the students that Tom Wenger, the California Commissioner, and his wife Debra, came to Fresno the following weekend to see the group again, at the Fresno Scottish Games.
