Cycling on Shikoku
Golden Week, a series of National holidays in Japan, was a perfect chance to escape the city and head over to Shikoku, Japan's fourth largest island. It was quite a feat loading all my camping gear and my bicycle onto the train and then a ferry, but as the pictures will show, it was definitely worth it!

I met Jane at the ferry terminal near Osaka and we boarded the tiny ferry. Thank goodness we had made reservations as we were allocated about six inches of sleeping space while most people slept sprawled about the deck beside vending machines and tables! Nine hours later, we arrived in Toyo town on Shikoku.

Shikoku is predominately rural, and we spent five awesome days cruising up and down the mountains surrounded by lush vegetation, gorgeous waterfalls, and turquoise rivers. Japan's cities are packed with people, but once you escape to the countryside, the landscape is spectacular!

Thank goodness for Jane!! She did all the navigating as she can read and speak Japanese. (I even made her carry a flag on the back of her bike, just like a typical Japanese tour guide being followed by a pack of camera-toting tourists!)
