Posted traffic speeds are slow--60 to 80km (37 to 56mph), so if you go faster be prepared with a ¢1,000 ($7.00) red note to help explain that you are a tourist and "Hablo poco Espanol." The local police DO NOT have the right to take your drivers license, so do not be alarmed by this ploy and offer more than the customary ¢1,000 note. If they do not accept the note, the ticket is a nice souvenir, and there is no reciprocity with the U.S.A. You can pay it if you are in the mood when you return your car.
