Awsome new Article on Selena! And New
Pictures of the Week.
Terminally
ill woman's pain eased by Selena's music
Tracey
Kennedy says she feels 'calming presence' listening to Tejano star
Selena's charm
has been credited with enchanting the masses. Her life has been
said to defy
all odds. Her death has been characterized as a cruel irony - almost
from the day
she was murdered by her fan club president in 1995, she became an
international
star. Now, a 30-year-old woman in New Zealand says the Tejano
singer's music
is working miracles on her terminal cancer.
"I don't want it to sound crazy, but when I hear her music I just
feel a
sort of calming presence," said Tracey Kennedy, who lives in
Wellington,
New Zealand. "It's hard to explain, really. But if I'm in a
down mood
or in a bit of pain, I find if I listen to her it puts me back
on the
right track. I use no medication whatsoever. Her music is
enough."
But it wasn't until she was diagnosed with chronic bowel cancer
in 1999
that Selena became what Kennedy calls a guardian angel.
Soon after
the diagnosis, doctors told Kennedy her cancer had
spread
too far, damaged too much and that they could do nothing
for her
but give her radiotherapy in the meantime.
For her pain, they could give her morphine. Kennedy chose
Selena.
"Every time I've been in the hospital I've taken her CDs, listened
to them
and it's just hard to explain," said Kennedy, now a
second-hand
bookshop owner. "I'd never been anyone's ardent fan.
And Selena,
she sort of gave me an epiphany."
With Kennedy's final fate looming at any given time, she now
dreams
of crossing the world this year to Selena's hometown.
She looks forward to joining the legions of other fans who come
every
March 31 to Selena's grave at Seaside Memorial Park. She
looks
forward to placing a Paua egg, similar to the Faberge eggs
that she
has read Selena collected, on Selena's grave.
She hopes to tell Abraham and Marcella Quintanilla just how
much of
a difference their daughter still makes, and how deeply her
music
still touches.
Airfare runs up to $4,000 a ticket in New Zealand's dollars, much
of which
Kennedy's family is still trying to gather.
"If it wasn't for (Selena's) music, I don't know where Tracey would
be today,"
said her mother, Julie Kennedy. "Every time she felt
down she
would get her little CD player and sing along with
Selena's
songs. Just watching Tracey when she has her music on
. . .
she has the biggest simile on her face, even when she is
hurting.
It's amazing."
Abraham Quintanilla said despite all the letters and visits he
continues
to receive, the testimonies he still hears and the
publicity
surrounding his daughter to this day, he finds stories such
as Kennedy's
astounding. Last month the Quintanilla family
received
a copy of a New Zealand magazine article featuring
Kennedy's
story.
"Selena touched so many hearts," he said. "Almost six years
later
we get so many people at the museum we have here, so
many letters.
"I can't find the words to explain this," Quintanilla said. "I guess
when you
concentrate on something hard enough, the mind can
shut anything
off. Even pain." But Tracey Kennedy and her family said
they know
they
can't put
death off. They choose not to rely on any medical time clock
predicting
when she might die. Instead, they rely on the music of a
woman
long gone. "We're going to do everything we can to get to Corpus
Christi,"
Julie
Kennedy said. "Tracey's been wanting to do this for such a
long time.
And I feel now that time is running out. She needs her
dream." |
