San Diego City Council Supports
Proposed "Matthew's Law"
The San Diego City Council went on record Tuesday in support
of the proposed "Matthew's Law," which would make anyone
who murders a child under 14 in California automatically eligible
for the death penalty.
The county Board of Supervisors also was
expected to support the legislation named for
9-year-old Matthew Cecchi, who was killed
November 14 in a restroom at Oceanside
Harbor as his aunt waited for him outside.
Councilwoman Barbara Warden said the
bill by Assemblyman Steve Baldwin, R-El
Cajon, is an appropriate response to the boy's
killing. "Like a lot of people in San Diego and throughout the nation, I was
deeply saddened and outraged over the senseless murder of Matthew,"
Warden said.
Mayor Susan Golding said she was furious over the killing. "I don't think
we can make a sentence harsh enough to compensate for the loss of life and
the tragedy that occurred," Golding said.
Brandon Wilson, the 20-year-old drifter accused of the murder, confessed
in court and has been ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation before his
December 18 preliminary hearing. The judge wants to determine whether he is
fit to stand trial.
