La Mesa City Council Supports
Proposed "Matthew's Law"
13 January, 1999
La Mesa - The City Council unanimously passed a resolution calling for the state of California to pass AB 4 by Assemblyman Steve Baldwin. The bill titled "Matthew's Law", is in memory of 9 year old Matthew Cecchi who was brutally slain in Oceanside on November 14, 1998.
La Mesa City Councilman Jay LaSuer, asked the Council to back Baldwin's bill that would make the murder of a child under the age of 14, a death penalty special circumstance. The vote was 5-0.
"The support for this legislation is beginning to snowball," said Assemblyman Steve Baldwin. "And, we will need to show a lot of support across the entire state in order to pass AB 4," Baldwin stated.
Several local governments including the County of San Diego Board of Supervisors and the San Diego City Council have passed resolutions calling for the state to enact "Matthew's Law".
