"NEW"TRITION
I am frequently asked how I ever became interested in the subject of optimum nutrition.
That interest was sparked during my dental school days by our professors of physiology and chemistry and in addition by the book, "Applied Nutrition" by Harold F. Hawkins, D.D.S.
These three great teachers motivated and stimulated my belief that dentists should be able to show their patients how to prevent dental caries and periodontal gum diseases rather than just follow the usual "cut and fill" routine.
This led to following the nutritional scientific literature and to personal study with many of the leading preventive medicine practitioners. Some of these include: Emanuel Cheraskin, M.D., D.M.D., Francis Pottenger, M.D., Royal Lee, D.D.S., Jeff Bland, Ph.D, Herman Becks, M.D., John Myers, M.D., Jonathan Wright, M.D., Enfried Pfieffer Ph.D., Alan Gaby, M.D., Melvin Page, D.D.S., Granville Knight, M.D. and my first mentor, Harold Hawkins, D.D.S.
All this study with these great leaders of the prevention movement has resulted in my being able to interpret and present nutritional matters in more encompassing and enlightening ways than those offered by writers who have had more limited experience.
As a result of having given frequent lectures about nutrition and its role in prevention, I was asked to become a columnist for the Ojai Valley News. My "Nutritionally Speaking" articles answering readers' questions was a popular feature of the paper for 17 years.
In response to many readers' request for a book, the over 900 articles that appeared in my columns were reviewed and 200 of the most popular questions were put into book form. Readers have found the short, easy to ready information, offers basic solutions to everyday nutritional problems.
