Some Poetry And Prose Links
The Virtual Fridge: No, the Virtual Fridge is not a place where you keep virtual food cold. Actually,
its more like a virtual version (say that ten times fast) of one of those magnetic poetry kits
that you sometimes see on people's refrigerators. Except with this thing, you get a much larger selection
of words. You can create poems by picking words that are randomly generated from certain wordlists (most wordlist
have a theme, like "Kidspeak" or "Shakespeare" or "Noir") and then post the poems up for others to read and comment
on. All in all, this is one of the most fun poetry sites on the web; try it out for yourself.
The Alsop Review: Though not updated
on a regular basis, The Alsop Review has one of the finest collections of poetry and fiction on the web. These poets and writers
may not be household names (so few are, especially the poets) but they are professionals and they are damn good.
Apples and Oranges, Oranges and Apples: A very nicely designed site, with some very good poetry from around the world.
Pyrowords: Another great poetry e-zine, though this
one is quarterly. Some of the more interesting features include their Interactive Poetry Pages and the Literary Rose Awards. Pyrowords offers
the Literary Rose Award to other excellent webpages; most of the winners seem to be those who innovatively combine the written
(or is that typed?) word with the visual.
The Poetry Project: This is the home page for a group
that sponsers readings and workshops in the New York area. Its included here (just in case you're like me and you don't happen to
live in New York) because it has some very good poetry (including a few from one of my favorite poets, Eileen Myles) and a nice selection
of links.
Real Poetik: Now this an interesting idea, an email
poetry magazine. Join the mailing list and about twice a week one or two really good poems will be sent to you. Worth checking out if you have
a lonely email box, or even if you don't...
The Shiki Internet Haiku Salon: An all-around great site for those
interested in haiku. It contains information on haiku in general, on poet Shiki Masaoka in particular, and on how to
join their mailing list.
Web Del Sol: Web Del Sol calls itself a "literary arts complex". I'm not entirely
sure what that means, but I do know one thing, this place is huge. It is the host of numerious literary publications and contains more
poetry, fiction, and essays than you can shake a stick at (not that you really would really want to be shaking sticks at those things...).
The Internet Poetry Archive: What a deal! Four great poets for the price of one!
The Internet Poetry Archive currently has selections of poetry (including audio recordings) from four truly great contemporary poets,
Czeslaw Milosz, Seamus Heaney, Philip Levine, and Robert Pinsky.
Russel Edson Page:
Russel Edson is perhaps the best prose poet in the world. You probably won't find any of his books on sale at any
store, and you probably won't find any other web pages devoted to him, so if you want to read his work (and believe
me, you do) you should go here.
The Libyrinth: The Libyrinth is one
of the most interestingly (and beautifully) designed webpages I've ever seen. Enter, and you can
wander through webpages devoted to some of the greatest authors of this century; Borges, Marquez, Kafka, and others. Its worth
getting lost in.
Poetry In Motion Postcards: I just think these are
really cool. You can send famous poems laid in a special background (and in some cases, with an audio recording too) as a
virtual postcard. Well, what are you waiting for? Go and enlighten a friend.
