Shorty Rogers 10-inch LPs with Maynard Ferguson

SHORTY ROGERS AND HIS ORCHESTRA FEATURING THE GIANTS, COOL AND CRAZY -- RCA Victor LPM-3138

Folks, here is one of the rarest and most expensive LPs MF ever had the opportunity to record on. It's the great little Shorty Rogers 10" LP, Cool and Crazy. Tracks include Coop de Graas, Infinity Promenade, Short Stop, and Boar-Jibu (recorded 3/26/53) and Contours, Tale of an African Lobster, Chiquito Loco, and Sweetheart of Sigmund Freud (recorded 4/2/53). This one lists for $250.00 in NMINT condition; $125.00 in VG+ condition. It's no wonder. This is West Coast Jazz at its finest. MF comes through very strong in a number of passages. I just can't say enough about this great little LP.
COPY #1. This copy has had both the top and bottom spines repaired with transparent tape. Someone did a very nice job, as it's hard to detect. The original owner wrote his name on the back cover. Otherwise, it's not a bad cover, considering it's 50 years old. Without the spine splits and the owner's name, I would have rated it EX. With them, it's just VG. The vinyl is definitely not the best. It's got a number of surface marks, and there's a lot of surface noise throughout. I'd have to rate the vinyl as just slightly below average -- GOOD+ to VG-. Overall, this one is VG-. Given the catalog prices on this one, a VG- copy should sell for about $75.00. Since I got it for a decent price, I'll let it go for just $25.00.
COPY #2. This copy has a relatively clean and nice cover. The front graphics are in great shape, and there are no seam or spine splits or cracks. There is some definite toning on the backing paper, but still, this is one of the nicer covers I've seen. I'm going to call it EX to EX+. The vinyl has some of the typical light surface scratches, but it plays quite nicely. It's EX to EX+, as well. Overall, this is a very nice copy, rating EX to EX+. It's $50.00.
COPY #3. This copy has a very clean and nice cover. The front graphics are in great shape, and there is some surface wear, front and back. The only real issue is seam splits top and bottom right, but still, this is one of the nicer covers I've seen. I'm going to call it EX. The vinyl has some of the typical light surface scratches, but it plays quite nicely. It's EX, as well. Overall, this is a very nice copy, rating a solid EX. It's $35.00.
