Best and Worst Supplements

Best Supplements

Protein-all proteins are made of amino acids, which are the building blocks of the body. Whey proteins have a high biological value, meaning that the amino acids are highly useful in tissue synthesis.

Creatine-gains of 10lbs or more in the first month are not uncommon. Most is from water retention into muscle cells, but the chemical promotes creation of adenosine triphosphate, the energy the body uses to build and repair.

Worst Supplements

HMB-I heard a lot of comments that it was worthless, but I had to give it a try. After a few weeks of usage, I agreed.

Arginine-as a simple amino acid, and one of the most common, the body gets enough from proteins in foods. It doesn't do well to promote growth hormone production.

Ornithine-same reasons as arginine.

Supplement Definitions

Arginine-Most abundant amino acid, found in many foods. Does not promote growth hormone with supplementation, as many sellers claim.

Arginine Pyroglutamate-A derivitave of arginine, which does promote growth hormone production effectively when used with lysine.

ATP-Adenosine Triphosphate, energy for muscle movement, energy and rebuilding. Creatine Monohydrate bonds to a phosphate molecule to create ATP. Provides longer endurance and faster recovery after workouts.

B12 Vitamin-Assists in repair of damaged cells.

Chrysin-A natural organic compound that is rumored to decrease estrogen production.

Creatine Phosphate-A simpler compound than creatine monohydrate, requiring two phoshpate molecules to combine in order to create ATP.

Dextrose-Two glucose molecules joined together, promotes insulin release.

Ephedrine-Pharmaceutical drug that is similar to ma hwang.

Fructose-A sweet sugar that does not promote insulin release.

Glucose-A simple sugar, deriving from complex carbohydrates.

Insulin-Hormone made by the pancreas to maintain blood sugar levels. It can help the body accept creatine and other amino acids.

Lysine-Fairly common amino acid. Recent studies back up an Italian claim from 1981 that this amino acid with an equal amount of arginine pyroglutamate, promotes an effective biological release of growth hormone.

Ma Hwang-Sounds like a Chinese phone company, but is another word for natural ephedrine. This burns fat by slightly increasing the temperature of the body, notably fat cells.

Meal Replacement Powder-Usually a packet of protein and other nutrients that can be easily prepared and consumed.

OKG-Derivitave of ornithine, which may promote a moderate amount of growth hormone release.

Ornithine-Amino acid said to produce a mild release of growth hormone.

Saw Palmetto-An organic plant material that may decrease the production of DHT (dihyltestosterone), contributor to hair growth and baldness. By reducing production of DHT, there is more free testosterone for muscle.

Tryptophan-Amino acid not sold in the U.S. because of an impure batch sold several years ago that killed several people. It is effective but usually safe. Promotes drowsiness and growth hormone production. Naturally abundant in turkey. Legal for importation to U.S. but not for resale unless prescribed.

Vanadyl Sulfate-May promote insulin release after a workout.
