Political Structure in NIGERIA

 

Government: Military since December 31, 1983. Legislation now by decree of the

Provisional Ruling Council (PRC). Final phase of democratization begun in 1995

Is to be completed on October 1, 1998 with the swearing in of an elected President.

Head of State: General Sani Abacha. Assumed office on November 17, 1993, and

Heads the PRC.

National Government: The Federal Executive Council is appointed by the head of

State and approved by the PRC, to which it is subordinate.

State government: States are run by 36 military administrators appointed by

The PRC and are helped by the state executive council of commissioners. States

Enact edicts, which are inferior to the federal decrees.

 

Main political parties: Five political parties were registered and approved by

Government in 1996, in accordance with the transition program-- United

Nigeria Congress Party (UNCP); Democratic Party of Nigeria (DPN); Committee
