THE INDY HI-WINDERS CAR CLUB INC.

INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.

FOUNDED IN 1962

In March of 1962 a group of young men with a passion for cars and drag racing met at an Enco Service Station on West 16th Street in Indianapolis, Indiana in order to form a club.

Before the official club name "The Indy Hi-Winders" was selected, several names were considered including "The Pacers", which would, ironically, many years later become the name of Indiana's NBA basketball team.

Common with most clubs started in the 60's, "The Indy Hi-Winders" focused on drag racing at Indianapolis Raceway Park, the home of the Nationals, Muncie Dragway, and Bunker Hill Drag Strip. Managing at Bunker Hill approximately once a month enabled the club treasury to grow.

By the late 60's, members had matured and priorities changed. The club was wavering with only five or six members remaining active, meeting whenever and wherever they could, attempting to hold things together.

On September 19, 1974, "The Indy Hi-Winders, Inc." strengthened and formed a not-for-profit corporation in the State of Indiana.

In 1975 the club was offered the opportunity to host and run the "500 World of Wheels", a project that continues today. It was during this time club membership grew, a clubhouse was acquired, and involvement in various other car shows ensued.

The club organized a Nationals Poker Run (21 years and running in 1996) to coincide with the National Drags held on Labor Day at Indianapolis Raceway Park, today, both remain popular annual events.

In the 80's, another of the club's dreams became reality. Property was acquired and a clubhouse built a few blocks from the famous Indianapolis 500 Mile race track. Over the years it has become a permanent home for meetings and entertainment, complete with air conditioning, television, VCR, stereo, pool and ping-pong tables, not to mention all the memorabilia collected over the past 34 years.

The club sported tan and brown jackets for nearly 28 years before updating to the now colorful aqua. Watch for these hot new jackets and if you want to talk "rodding" from the 60's to the present, don't hesitate to stop and say "Hey!"

For the last three years, the club has been involved in running the Super Chevy Show and the Mopar Nationals along with other events at Indianapolis Raceway Park.

"The Indy Hi-Winders" have also been involved in the community, contributing anatomically correct dolls to the Indianapolis Police Department and to the Speedway Police Department to assist them in child abuse/molestation cases. They are currently working with Riley Children's Hospital to coordinate a car show, combined with their Annual Benefit Motorcycle Show.

The club which at one time limited its membership to 33 to coincide with the starting field of the Indianapolis 500, waived the rule because of increased interest and now has a membership of 35. In March of 1996, "The Indy Hi-Winders" celebrate their 34th birthday with three of its charter members still actively involved in the sport of street rodding. The club now boasts three second generation members who will undoubtedly lead "The Indy Hi Winders" into the next century.

"Help find a missing child"

National Center for Missing and Exploited Children

"Call 1-800-THE-LOST if you've seen this child"

"We support the work of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children"

First, we help find many of the 2,200 children who are reported missing every day, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigations National Crime Information Center. In fact, we’ve helped find more than 47,000 of these children during the past 15 years. And in addition, the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children helps prevent these disappearances. We have trained more than 155,000 police and other law-enforcement officers. We have published more than 18 million publications, distributed free of charge to people like Denise. And we have other programs that can help stop abductions before they happen. Frankly, we must have help from people like yourself, concerned about children at risk, to continue these programs. Please consider mailing a check of $25, $50, $100, or more if you possibly can, to: National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) Fulfillment Center, Department 240 747 Third Avenue, 16th Floor New York, New York, 10017 You can also reach us by telephone (1-800-766-1616) or E-mail (eja@idt.net) to donate. And, if you’d like to learn more about NCMEC’s recovery, prevention and education programs, please visit our web site at:
