Fisheye fun with the Deitz Super Wide 0.42x Macro Adapter

The Deitz Infra Super Wide Macro 0.42x adapter screws onto the front of a 50mm lens to produce a 21mm lens with a semi-fisheye effect.

Below are four photos. First is a shot with my Vivitar 17-28mm lens (a.k.a. Samyang 18-28) set at the 17mm position (actually about 18mm in the Popular Photo tests of the Samyang).

Second is the Deitz adapter mounted on my Pentax autofocus 50mm f1.4.

Third is the Deitz adapter mounted on a Pentax 40mm f2.8 "pancake" lens.

Fourth is the Deitz adapter mounted on my Pentax autofocus 28-80mm lens (using 58->49 stepdown ring) with the lens set to 28mm.

All shots were taken at f11.

The front portion of the adapter can be removed leaving just the rear element which gives you a Macro function.

Notice that the Deitz with 50mm lens is wider than the 17mm lens due to the fish-eye effect. There is very slight corner vignetting visible in the 4x6 machine print.

The Deitz with 40mm gives the most pleasing effect in my opinion. This shot is much wider than the 50 and I like the look of the clipped circular fisheye. The additional scene (vs the 50mm photo) is not very sharp since the lens isn't designed for this but I do like the effect. The middle 2/3 of the photo appears quite sharp (for an add-on lens).

The 28mm shot does give the circular fisheye effect though no more scene is included than with the 40mm. The cropping may be from the 58->49mm stepdown ring, or just the 28mm lens "seeing" the edge of the Deitz adapter. A fixed 28 or 35mm lens with 49mm filter thread may work better.

All in all, great fun for around $50-60 US when you can find these adapters.

For more info on fisheye adapters for MF see Bob Monaghan's web site. My Deitz adapter is very similar to the Sakar Superwide 0.42x Mutar discussed there.

Several people have contacted me about where to get adapters such as this. AFAIK the Deitz is no longer available new. But follow this link to search ebay for used Deitz or other brand adapters. Look for 0.42x adapters in the search results.

Also, Adorama Camera apparently sells a 0.42x fisheye adapter under their own store brandname. It doesn't appear to be on their web page so give them a call or email.
