This page is dedicated to my favorite musical instrument -- the flute. I
began to play the flute (in the school band) when I was in seventh grade, and I
immediately fell in love. Not long after, I began taking private lessons, and to take
the Royal Conservatory of Music playing exams. At the moment, I am preparing for the
Grade 10 exam. I have also participated in the school music program at my high school,
Bishop Carroll High School, and even went to the Provincial Championships with
the Wind Ensemble in 1995. As well, I recently attended the 1997 Toronto Heritage
Festival in Ontario, Canada, also with the Wind Ensemble. In addition, I have begun
teaching lessons to a couple of beginner students, which has been a unique and
rewarding experience.
People have often asked me if there is a flutist who is my idol, and although
there isn't one as such, I do greatly admire the talent of James Galway. A couple of
years ago, I had the chance to see him perform live when he gave a concert here in
Calgary (Alberta, Canada), and I also attended his master class the following day. I
particularly enjoy James Galway's classical recordings, but I also share my family's
appreciation of his recordings of Celtic music. On at least one of his albums, he
plays not only the flute, but the tin whistle as well. James Galway is arguably the
best flutist in the world, and I hope he is able to play for many years to come.
