You wrote: I have limited experience in computers. I use windows 3.1 version and am wondering how do you download files off of the internet and then retrieve them so I can read them. These files are not .exe files and I am having some difficulty . Please explain in very laymens terms the steps I should be using and then how do I go about deleting these files. Answer: It depends on what files you are refering to. If it is some text that you are reading & would like a hard copy of it on your hard drive, the easy way is to copy & paste the text to you word processor. (remember you must highlight the text first before you copy & paste). (also, you will need to open up your word processor & minimize it first before you connect to the internet & then use the "alt" & "tab" keys to switch between programs). If you need more information, let us know what type of files you are trying to download & if you are using Netscape or something else.
You wrote: Good morning: I have just bought a used Epson Action Laser 11 printer and have a question. If I have a Packard Bell 486 computer how do I install the used printer step by step. I cannot seem to find this printer in the control panel or the print manager. Will I need a disk to set up this printer. I run on 3.1 windows. Please help as soon as possible. Answer: If you cannot find this printer in the list of printers, then you will need to get the print drivers for it. The internet is a pretty good source to get drivers for peripherals. Download this file from the Internet. Go to this address & it will be there for downloading. WinBoss On-line for HP Drivers After you download it, when windows asks you for this file, tell it where it is. (Maybe put it on a disk. It might be easier for you.) Let us know if you need more info.
You wrote: Is an AMD or Cyrix CPU as fast or good as an Intel CPU? Answer: IBM & Cyrix have released there new MMX Pentium-class CPU which is code named M2, the 6x86MX chip's integer performance is supposedly faster than Intel's Pentium MMX & the new Pentium II processor, & it costs significantly less. These chips offer a great price-performance combination. However their floating-point performance is not as good as that of the Intel chips, making them a secondary choice if you do mainly computer assisted design (CAD)or 3D rendering. The other thing to keep in mind is that the 6x86MX chip & the AMD K6 chip, is unable to work in multiprocessor machines.

You wrote: I am new at using the computer, could you please tell me how to change the desktop picture in Windows 95? Answer: All you have to do is click on the Start Button, go up to Settings, go over & click on Control Panel, then double click on Display. Then you go to the Wallpaper list & choose any image in that list or you can click on browse & use any bmp image that you can find.
You wrote: How do you get graphics off the Internet in Windows 95 if they are not downloadable? Answer: You 1/2 minimize the Internet Explore (click on box beside the "x" in the upper right hand corner) so you can see some of your desktop in the background. Then you click & hold your left mouse button on the graphic you want & drag it onto your desktop. Then release your mouse button. That's it, then the image is on your hard drive.
You wrote: How do you use a jpg, gif or other image for your desktop background in Windows 95? Answer: You open up the image in one of your graphic application (like adobe PhotoShop) that will allow you to change the format of the image to a BMP. You can do this by going to File in the menu bar, clicking on Open & fine the graphic you want or you can drag & drop your image into the graphics application. Then you click on Save As & give the image a name. Then usually there is a "save as" box, where there are image formats you can chose from. Choose the BMP format. There usually is a "save in" box where you enter the directory to save the image to. Ideally, if you save it to the Windows directory the image will show up in the Display properties "wall paper" list.
You wrote: IDE or SCSI? Answer: IDE used to have much slower spin rates & data transfer rates than SCSI. Data transfer rates on IDE drives have drastically increased compared to older models. Now IDE have average access time of under 11ms. The new UIDE (Ultra IDE) internal data transfer rates up to 33.3MB/sec (megabytes per second). EIDE (Enhanced IDE) drives are limited to 16.6MB/sec. Then original SCSI interface transfer rate of up to 5MB/sec . SCSI-2 transfer rate of up to 10MB/sec. Wide SCSI transfer rate of up to 20MB/sec & UW SCSI transfer rate of up to 40MB/sec. Ultra IDE with transfer rates up to 33.3MB/sec compare to SCSI-2 & Wide SCSI. Only the latest UW SCSI can outperform the high transfer rate of the UIDE. The UW SCSI drives cost roughly 3 times that of the new UIDE drives. However when in a multi user environment like LAN (local area network) SCSI is better. IDE drives have to deal with simultaneous access situations, the controller has to tell the CPU to switch between various tasks, there the CPU resource have to keep track of what has priority to the hard drive at all times. Fore example, if you try reading from a floppy while trying to write to it at the same time with an IDE connection, one task has to finish before the other can start. With SCSI connection you don't have to wait. It is true multitasking.
