Religious aspects of Christmas in Italy

Christmas in Italy lasts from the Novena, eight days before Christmas, to the Epiphany, January 6. Calabrian shepherds, or pifferari, enter Rome and salute the shrine of the Virgin Mother with their wild bagpipe music.
