Aims and Objectives of the Alberta Friends of Guyana Association
The Association is non-political. It does not get involved with the broader political issues in Guyana or in Canada. Its membership list is confidential and any information it deals with is held in the highest level of confidentiality.
Objectives
To provide for the recreation of the members and to afford opportunity for friendly and social activities.
To provide a forum for the consideration and discussion of topics and educational, social, economic and general subjects.
To assist newcomers to the Guyanese community in Edmonton and surrounding areas to adjust to living in Canada.
to assist members and other Guyanese in matters relating to their welfare.
To act as a liaison between the Guyanese and Canadian Communities.
Accountability and Service
Elections are held annually with all paid-up members eligible to vote and hold office.
Administered by a committee of management made up of nine members. Included is a Chairperson, Vice-chairperson, Treasurer, Secretary, Assistant Secretary, Sports Coordinator, and Entertainment Coordinator.
All decisions of the Committee of Management are subject to ratification and examination of the membership of the Association. All decisions must be approved by the membership of the Association.
Members of the Committee of Management and of the Association cannot profit from their involvement in the Association.
The financial books of the Association are audited annually and a financial statement is submitted to the Government of Alberta on an annual basis.
Registered with the Government of Alberta as a Non-profit Association for the past 20 years.BR>
Upon adequate notice, the records of the Association are open for inspection by any member of the Association.
The Association is a member of the Edmonton Mulitcultural Association.
-has been part of the Edmonton Heritage Festival on many occasions.
-plans cultural and social activities for its members and the community.
-has been involved with providing medical help for some Guyanese who need it.
-represented members of the community at Immigration hearings.
-has arranged presentations on issues and topics of interests to members and the community.
Officials of the Association have been involved in helping to plan the CARIWEST parade and activities in Edmonton.
Membership Information
membership in the Alberta Friends of Guyana Association is open to:
Any member of the community who subscribes to the aims and objectives of the Alberta Friends of Guyana Association
Anyone of Guyanese descent regardless of political affiliation, race or religion.
Any Guyanese student studying in Edmonton or the surrounding areas
Spouse and children of individuals of Guyanese descent
