Christian Baptism
Baptism is the sacrament of Christian belonging. When one seeks Baptism,
one seeks belonging as a Christian. Baptism is not a single event or
isolated ceremony, Baptism is a way of life. Just as marriage is not just
a ceremony, but a process of friendship, dating, engagement leading to
a wedding and a life that flows from that event, so Baptism is not simply a
ceremony but a journey of faith that leads to the waters of the Font, then
flows from it as a life to be lived!! That life is defined in the promises
made during the liturgy:
Will you continue in the apostle's teaching and fellowship,
in the breaking of the bread, and in the prayers?
Will you perservere in resisting evil and whenever you fall
into sin, will you repent and return to the Lord?
Will you proclaim by word and example the good news of
God in Christ?
Will you seek to serve Christ in all persons, loving your
neighbor as yourself?
Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and
respect the dignity of every human being?
The commitment you make is returned to you by the Christian fellowship of
St. Mary's. As a member of the Catholic community and your parish family,
you should expect support, encouragement and faith from them in return, in
every step of your life in faith, from the Baptismal event and on!!
