ANOINTING Bible References

The crippled woman in Luke 13:10-17 is just one of many people Jesus heals in Luke. Much of Jesus' ministry was spent healing people with physical, emotional or spiritual illnesses. Through the sacrament of Anointing, one of the seven official sacraments of the Catholic church, Jesus' ministry of extending God's healing love is continued.
In this sacrament, people young and old are anointed with sacred oil, called chrism, and prayed over by a priest or deacon. The sacrament is often given to people who are struggling with a serious illness, going into surgery, or dying. The sacrament is not a guarantee of physical healing, but a way of receiving in a special way God's love and strength during those times of trial.

Psalm 23
1 Psalm 23 A psalm of David.

1 The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters,
3 he restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, [1] I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
6 Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

Mark 6
7 Calling the Twelve to him, he sent them out two by two and gave them authority over evil [1] spirits.
8 These were his instructions: "Take nothing for the journey except a staff--no bread, no bag, no money in your belts.
9 Wear sandals but not an extra tunic.
10 Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you leave that town.
11 And if any place will not welcome you or listen to you, shake the dust off your feet when you leave, as a testimony against them."
12 They went out and preached that people should repent.
13 They drove out many demons and anointed many sick people with oil and healed them.

Luke 13
10 On a Sabbath Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues,
11 and a woman was there who had been crippled by a spirit for eighteen years. She was bent over and could not straighten up at all.
12 When Jesus saw her, he called her forward and said to her, "Woman, you are set free from your infirmity."
13 Then he put his hands on her, and immediately she straightened up and praised God.

2 Timothy 2
11 Here is a trustworthy saying: If we died with him, we will also live with him;
12 if we endure, we will also reign with him. If we disown him, he will also disown us;

James 5
14 Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord.
15 And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven.
16 Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.
