SCREAM AGAIN?
by Michael McCarthy

I had the pleasure of reading an early draft of SCREAM II this week. First, let me say it was easily as humorous as the first. Those of you who think all sequels suck will actually find yourselves the brunt of many witty jokes as you watch. Second, it was much more, well, horrific than the first film. Indeed, screenwriter Kevin Willimamson has outdone himself. While there may be homages galore, this is no remake or rehash of the first film. On the contrary, a continuation is more like it. Besides, the first Scream was all about homages anyway, wasn't it? At any rate, I have the following to report...

STAB, a movie based book "The Woodsboro Murders," plays in theaters while the film takes place. The book, of course, is Gale Weathers' (Courtny Cox) telling of the events that transipred in Scream. In this film witin the film, Tori Spelling is literaly named whenever Neve Campbell's character Sidney appears. Entertainment Weekly recently confirmed that Spelling does indeed play Sidney in STAB. What's especially interesting though is that Johnny Depp is named whenever Skeet Ulrich's character Billy appears! Has Depp signed on to appear in Stab? Wish I knew. However, it would certainly make sense. For one thing, Depp's first film was Wes Craven's Nightmare On Elm Street. Secondly, everyone is always talking about how Ulrich looks like Depp. Makes perfect sense to me.

Rumors for weeks have stated that Jada Pinkett's character is killed in the opening scene, a psuedo-homage to Drew Barrymore's early offing in the first Scream Film. However, these rumors ring false. There is only one character identified as "an attractive young black woman" and this character is Hallie, who does NOT die in the opening scene.

Another rumor I can shoot down is that which campbell's character Sidney befriending Jerry O'Connell's Cotton Weary. While Sidney does feel guilty that he has spent a year of his life in jail (thanks to her wrongfully fingering him for the murder of her mother), the two are not friends.

What else? The setting for the film is a college campus where Sidney and Hallie are pledging a sorority. Dewey is no longer Deputy Dewey, but, rahter, a campus security dude, this thanks in part to a limp his wound in the first film garnered him. Also, Randy the video geek has become Gale Weathers new assistant.

OK, that's enough. If i go any further, I'll end up ruining a surprise (or two). That's the last thing I want to do because, quite frankly, Scream II is one sequel that is not going to suck. Actually, there is one more thing: the title. The cover page says SCREAM II, but the first page says SCREAM AGAIN. Guess that much has yet to be finalized...

STUFF FROM ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY

Well, I have some new info on the sequel courtesy of ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY. I can give you some definites of who is going to be in the sequel. Up-and- comming Gen-Xers which include Jada Pinkett (who is rumored to get iced in the opening sequence, à la Barrymore), Sliders' Jerry O'Connell, Buffy the Vampire Slayer's Sarah Michelle Gellar, and yes, even Tori Spelling, who will play Sidney.

Not to say that Neve Campbell won't be back as Sidney. Confused? Ok the sequel takes place 2 years after the original, with Sidney (Campbell) going off to college. Gale Weathers (being the bitch that she is) wrote a book on the whole ordeal which was then made into a movie with Tori Spelling playing Sidney. Ironic isn't it? Afterall, in the first one Sidney did say (in response who would play her in a movie),"With my luck, I'd guess Tori Spelling." So in other words, the first Scream becomes a movie within the new movie.

Also, there has been talk of a SCREAM 3, and the script will be finished in April '98. Wonder what will be in that one. Hopefully, Scream won't be like the 80's teen slasher movies. Remember Jason Takes Manhattan? At least Wes Craven is directing the second Scream because when he left other people to direct the next billion Nightmare on Elm Streets, Drew Barrymore's character Casey had it right when she said, "The first one was scary, but the rest sucked." Only Wes Craven's New Nightmare came close to being as good as the first.

The sequel has been pushed up from Dec 19 to Dec 12, which would put SCREAM 2 in the path of the next James Bond flick, Tomorrow Never Dies, and James Cameron's Titanic, both due Dec. 19. Bob Weinstein (Mirimax cochairman)says confidently, "We already have a built- in audience for the sequel."
