Chrysalis: 1) the pupa of an insect; especially of a butterfly; the capsule-enclosed stage between catapiller and butterfly during which an individual develops and from which the winged adult emerges. 2) anything in an undeveloped or transitory stage.

On June 13, 1997 the beginning of a nationwide campaign was imposed on the streets of Portland Oregon. Commuters on the corner of Sandy and 39th Avenue witnessed its unveiling. At aproximately 7:15 am the first public pupa was installed at a decomposing motel that would see a metamorphic change of energy to become an AIDS hospice. A vote of hope and gratitude to all who witnessed it.

As told by one witness, "The cocoon lasted about four days...once the construction started to convert the motel to the AIDS hospice, the cocoon got tossed into a huge dumpster, blessing all the post-industrial waste it came in contact with."
