Additional Information on Kinesiotherapy

My name is William N. Cervantes, and I am a Certified Registered Kinesiotherapist. The significance of this posting, is to introduce the Profession of Kinesiotherapy, into the private sector.

Kinesiotherapy (formally Corrective Therapy) has been in existence since 1946. The roots of our profession began during W.W.II, and is still actively practiced in Veterans Administration Medical Centers throughout the United States. Kinesiotherapy is an economical alternative, to the escalating cost of Physical Therapy.

Kinesiotherapists, or Kt’s, (rehabilitative therapists) are Allied Health Care Professionals who evaluate and treat people with health problems resulting from disease, illness, injury as well as neuromuscular and developmental disorders. Kt’s assess joint motion, muscle strength and endurance, as well as performance activities amongst their responsibilities.

Treatment includes therapeutic exercise, cardiovascular endurance training, and training in activities of daily living. Trained in understanding the importance of motivating patients to challenge their physical and functional performance, I utilize two fundamental modalities, therapeutic exercise and education. This distinctive approach has resulted in significance contributions in the areas of general strengthening and conditioning. The two functional modalities are intended to reverse debilitation, restore ambulation and mobility and increase functional capacity.

Kinesiotherapists assess and evaluate patients utilizing a variety of factors to develop and implement therapeutic programs, based on prescribed goals of an attending Physiatrist. The process involved recording observable and measurable physical findings such as, range of motion (ROM), ambulation and mobility, manual muscle testing, mental status and skin integrity. Documentation of patient short and long term goals, which included the following objectives: (1) to minimize physical deconditioning, (2) enhance and maintain functional capacity, and (3) educate patients, family members and caregivers in dependent and independent patient care.

In addition, as an Intern I conducted general conditioning groups, and flexibility and mobility classes in the nursing home, as well as in the psychiatric day treatment center.

With the increased numbers of individuals occupying nursing home care facilities, there is an increasing need for exercise programs in these facilities to prevent physical deconditioning and loss of independence. Registered Kinesiotherapists are uniquely trained and positioned to meet the economic challenges to providing cost effective quality health care.

Thank you for your time. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
